A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR AL JARREAU FOR HIS EXTRAORDINARY TALENTS IN VOCAL PERFORMANCE AND TO COMMEMORATE HIS APPEARANCE AT THE AUNTIE KAREN FOUNDATION LEGENDS OF SPONSORSHIP OPPORTUNITIES CONCERT SERIES ON FEBRUARY 24, 2006.

Whereas, possessing a true gift and love for music, Al Jarreau has been singing since the age of four, when he began to harmonize with his brothers and perform on his own at a variety of local events in his hometown of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and

Whereas, a star athlete and exceptional student, Mr. Jarreau did not devote a great deal of time to perfecting his voice in his collegiate years at Ripon College but still performed with the group "The Indigos" during that time; and

Whereas, graduating with an undergraduate degree in Psychology, he went on to earn his Master's Degree in Vocational Rehabilitation and settled down in San Francisco to begin a career in rehabilitation counseling; and

Whereas, unable to shake the hold that music had on his life, Mr. Jarreau found himself performing at a small jazz club with a trio headed by George Duke. He later relocated to Los Angeles and began his apprenticeship at famous nightspots and went on to New York City to gain national television exposure with Johnny Carson, Merv Griffin, David Frost, and Mike Douglas; and

Whereas, spotted by Warner Brothers Records talent scouts in 1975 at the Bla Bla Café in Los Angeles, Al Jarreau achieved national stardom with his debut album "We Got By"; and

Whereas, by 1977 he embarked on his first world tour and later that same year received his first American Grammy Award for Best Jazz Vocal Performance. He would go on to receive four more Grammy Awards throughout his career, making Mr. Jarreau one of the rare artists to have won Grammy Awards in the three categories of jazz, pop, and R&B; and

Whereas, the next two decades only brought Al Jarreau further acclaim and stardom, as every album and single he released was received with great acclaim. He even released his first-ever compilation album, "The Best of Al Jarreau", to commemorate his twenty years of success; and

Whereas, demonstrating his many talents, in 1996, he accepted a three-month run on Broadway as Teen Angel in the musical "Grease", and he has also made guest star appearances on "New York Undercover" and "Touched by an Angel"; and

Whereas, Mr. Jarreau continued to grace our ears with his mellifluous voice with the release of "Tomorrow Today" on March 7, 2000; and

Whereas, it is not often that this world is graced by such musical genius, and, accordingly, it is fitting and proper for the members of the South Carolina Senate to pause in their deliberations to honor Mr. Al Jarreau for his talent and his performing at the worthwhile event of the Legends of Sponsorship Opportunities Concert Series. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize and honor Al Jarreau for his extraordinary talents in vocal performance and commemorate his appearance at the Auntie Karen Foundation Legends of Sponsorship Concert Series on February 24, 2006.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mr. Al Jarreau.
