A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGE PARTICIPATION IN THE NINTH ANNUAL NATIVE ISLANDER GULLAH CELEBRATION OCCURRING ON HILTON HEAD ISLAND DURING THE MONTH OF FEBRUARY 2005.

Whereas, beginning February 3rd and running through February 27th, 2005, the Native Island Business and Community Affairs Association will host the Ninth Annual Native Islander Gullah Celebration on Hilton Head Island; and

Whereas, Gullah is more than simply a language and name of a people. Gullah today encompasses the essence of struggle, spirituality, perseverance, and tradition that the descendants of West Africans brought to the coastal islands of South Carolina and Georgia, in bondage, many years ago; and

Whereas, the Native Island Gullah descendants adhere to the customs of their ancestors through the sewing of sweet grass baskets, the weaving of casting nets, and the preparation of traditional Gullah foods; and

Whereas, the Native Islander Gullah Celebration is an event that showcases the arts, crafts, foods, and history of the Native Island Gullah people. Visitors have an opportunity to experience the food and music, receive firsthand historical information, and take a journey through the culture via the visual arts; and

Whereas, the celebration includes a month-long art exhibit, gospel concerts, and cultural symposiums. The wide variety of special events includes the Arts, Crafts, and Food Expo, demonstrating sweet grass basket sewing, indigo dyeing, and fishnet weaving; an Ol' Fashioned Gullah Barbecue offering classic barbecue favorites along with entertainment; De Gullah Playhouse featuring storytelling and performances by Aunt Pearly Sue and the Gullah Kinfolk; and the Fourth Annual Business and Economic Summit where county, state, and local leaders will address community issues related to economic growth and wealth management; and

Whereas, the celebration experience, which provides a first hand view of the Gullah culture, has been named one of the Top Twenty Events in the Southeast by the Southeast Tourism Society for the past four years. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, lend their support and encourage participation in the Ninth Annual Native Islander Gullah Celebration occurring on Hilton Head Island during the month of February 2005.
