A HOUSE RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING THE BROOME HIGH SCHOOL "CENTURIONS" OF SPARTANBURG COUNTY ON THEIR 2004 STATE AA FOOTBALL TITLE, AND HONORING THE PLAYERS AND COACH BILL OWENS ON THEIR IMPRESSIVE 11-4 SEASON.

Whereas, the Broome High School "Centurions" of Spartanburg County capped an outstanding 2004 football season with a thrilling 42-34 victory over the Cheraw High School "Braves" of Chesterfield County in the AA championship game; and

Whereas, although turnovers allowed Cheraw to bounce back from a 28-7 deficit, the Centurions were able to persevere thanks to an incredible team effort on both sides of the football; and

Whereas, the Broome defense held Cheraw to only seven points until the third quarter when Cheraw mounted its comeback effort, Broome's offense would not be denied, continuing to produce touchdowns and outdistancing the Braves; and

Whereas, Broome Quarterback Andrew Weathers connected with Markish Jones for a sixty-yard touchdown strike on only Broome's third pass try, and the offense went on to score three more first-half touchdowns; and

Whereas, running-back Jeriall Brannon piled up yardage behind the Broome offensive line finishing with a game-high one-hundred and fifty-nine yards on twenty-eight carries. D.J. Moore earned Most Valuable Player honors for the Centurions, catching a touchdown pass and returning a key interception all the way to the two yard line; and

Whereas, Antwane Glenn was the anchor for the Broome defense, flying around the field to record ten tackles and recover a fumble; and

Whereas, with this outstanding finish to the 2004 season, Broome has reached the pinnacle of AA football after four consecutive playoff years under Bill Owens. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives do hereby congratulate the Broome High School "Centurions" of Spartanburg County on their 2004 State AA title, and honor the players and Coach Bill Owens on their impressive 11-4 season.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Head Football Coach Bill Owens on behalf of the championship team.
