A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA AIKEN "PACERS" ON THEIR 2004 DIVISION II GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP, AND HONORING THE PLAYERS AND COACH MICHAEL CARLISLE ON THEIR EXCEPTIONAL SEASON.

Whereas, the University of South Carolina Aiken "Pacers" capped their impressive 2004 season by capturing the 42nd NCAA Division II Men's Golf National Championship. This marks the first National Title, of any kind, in school history; and

Whereas, the championship and the incredible season were made possible though hard work, before and during the season, by the players, coaches, and trainers; and

Whereas, this season marks the tenth time the "Pacers" have competed in the NCAA Division II National Championship Tournament in only thirteen years as a member of the NCAA. The team finished runner-up three times in the previous eight years; and

Whereas, this year, however, the team would not be denied, finishing at plus thirty-nine for the seventy-two hole tournament, nine shots better than second place CSU Chico; and

Whereas, the "Pacers" opened play tied for seventh after one day of competition. They then began a steady ascension up the rankings, finding themselves leading the field by one stroke over Barry University, and two ahead of CSU Chico, heading into Saturday's final round; and

Whereas, the "Pacers" proved they could weather the elements, fighting windy and rainy conditions, while firing the best round of the day and capturing the title; and

Whereas, Scott Brown of North Augusta, Dane Burkhart of Aiken, and Clint Smith of Asheboro, North Carolina, were each presented with individual trophies for finishing in the top 10 of the tournament's individual standings; and

Whereas, Coach Michael Carlisle was named "NCAA Division II Coach of the Year" by the Golf Coaches Association of America. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate the University of South Carolina Aiken "Pacers" on their 2004 NCAA Division II Golf Championship, and honor the players and Coach Michael Carlisle on their exceptional season.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to the University of South Carolina Aiken "Pacers" Golf Team and Head Coach Michael Carlisle.
