VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO EXPRESS THE SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY UPON THE DEATH OF FOUNDING PRESIDENT OF THE BAPTIST COLLEGE, NOW CHARLESTON SOUTHERN UNIVERSITY, AND LONGTIME PASTOR OF FIRST BAPTIST CHURCH OF CHARLESTON, DOCTOR JOHN HAMRICK, ON OCTOBER 24, 2004, AND TO CONVEY THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, the members of the General Assembly were deeply saddened by the death of Doctor John Hamrick on Oct 24, 2004; and
Whereas, Doctor Hamrick moved from Fountain Inn to Charleston in 1927 and was ordained at the age of nineteen. Five years later, he was called by First Baptist Church and served the historic congregation for twenty-nine years; and
Whereas, Doctor Hamrick was a graduate of the College of Charleston and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary; and
Whereas, Doctor Hamrick founded the First Baptist Church School in 1949, and served as it's superintendent for twenty years. Today, the school is an accredited college preparatory school with an enrollment of over five-hundred students; and
Whereas, Doctor Hamrick founded the Baptist College in 1964 and spent nineteen years as the first president. During that time, the College enrollment grew to over two thousand and facilities expanded to a forty-million dollar campus; and
Whereas, Doctor Hamrick was named a distinguished alumnus of the College of Charleston in 1993 and was awarded the state's highest honor, the Order of the Palmetto, by Governor Campbell in 1994; and
Whereas, Doctor Hamrick is survived by his loving wife of twenty-one years, Jane Scarpa Ezell Hamrick. Among other survivors are a son, John A. Hamrick Jr., two daughters, Carol Ezell-Gilson and Mary Nance Ezell MacDonough; eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Margaret Kelly Hamrick, and a daughter, Margaret Clare Hamrick Hollingsworth; and
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, Senate Concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, express their sorrow upon the death of the founder of Baptist College, long-time pastor of First Baptist Church of Charleston, devoted husband and father, and respected citizen, Doctor John Hamrick of Charleston, on October 24, 2004, and express their deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of Doctor Hamrick.
