VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO COMMEND DR. ELIZABETH GRESSETTE, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE PALMETTO STATE TEACHERS ASSOCIATION, FOR HER DISTINGUISHED CAREER AND MANY YEARS OF SERVICE IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF TEACHERS.
Whereas, Dr. Elizabeth Gressette is a native of St. Matthews and attended public school in Calhoun County during her formative years; and
Whereas, she graduated from Columbia College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education and went on to obtain a Masters degree in Special Education and a Ph.D. in Education from the University of South Carolina; and
Whereas, she taught kindergarten for ten years but elected not to join the South Carolina Education Association, the only professional organization for teachers at that time, but instead became active in and then became the first president of the Palmetto State Teachers Association; and
Whereas, the first few years as executive director provided many challenges in building membership and gaining recognition; and
Whereas, under Dr. Gressette's leadership, however, the Palmetto State Teachers Association has grown to over six thousand members, with local chapters established throughout the State, as well as student chapters at Winthrop University, the University of South Carolina, Converse, and Columbia College; and
Whereas, in recognition of her many aspects of service, she was selected as the Association Executive of the Year by the South Carolina Society of Association Executives in 1992, and received the 1999 Career Achievement Award presented by the Columbia College Alumnae Association; and
Whereas, Dr. Gressette has worked to strengthen the surrounding community throughout her lifetime; and
Whereas, she served as a president of the Rotary Club of Cayce-West Columbia; and
Whereas, Dr. Gressette is a faithful and active member of the Northside Baptist Church in West Columbia; and
Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives would like thank Dr. Gressette for her extensive contributions to teacher quality and training in South Carolina. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, hereby commend Dr. Elizabeth Gressette, Executive Director of the Palmetto State Teachers Association, for her distinguished career and many years of service improving the quality of teachers.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Elizabeth Gressette.
