A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND CHRISTOPHER BARFIELD OF SUMTER FOR HIS OUTSTANDING COURAGE AND CONCERN FOR OTHERS DEMONSTRATED WHEN HE SAVED A WOMAN FROM SEVERE BURNS IN JANUARY 2003, AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM ON BEING NAMED SUMTER COUNTY'S FIREFIGHTER OF THE YEAR.

Whereas, in January 2003, while traveling to a work site for his part-time employer Suburban Propane, Christopher Barfield spotted a woman running across the road with her pant leg on fire; and

Whereas, Mr. Barfield's firefighter instincts immediately took over. He quickly stopped his truck and ran to the woman where he used his coat to smother her flaming clothes before calling for help; and

Whereas, the woman escaped with minor burns that could have been severe without Mr. Barfield's split second reaction and heroism; and

Whereas, Mr. Barfield proudly serves the Sumter Fire Department as an eleven-year veteran, and recently the thirty-one year old engineer was honored by the American Legion Post 15 as Sumter County's Firefighter of the Year; and

Whereas, Christopher Barfield has demonstrated outstanding courage, selflessness, and concern for others throughout his service with the Sumter County Fire Department and this heroic rescue and his recent award are further evidence of Mr. Barfield's professionalism and commitment to firefighting and public service; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representative are pleased to have the opportunity to recognize such an outstanding South Carolinian as Mr. Christopher Barfield, an exceptional role model and a great credit to the firefighting profession. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, wish to commend Christopher Barfield of Sumter for his outstanding courage and concern for others demonstrated when he saved a woman from severe burns in January 2003, and to congratulate him on being named Sumter County's Firefighter of the Year.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Christopher Barfield.
