VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE UPON THE DEATH OF WILLIAM ALEXANDER PATTERSON, JR., PRESIDENT OF THE MINING ASSOCIATION OF SOUTH CAROLINA AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.
Whereas, the members of the Senate are deeply saddened to learn of the death of William Alexander "Bill" Patterson, Jr., of Holly Hill, on Saturday, January 15, 2005, at the age of seventy-one; and
Whereas, Mr. Patterson was the beloved husband of Ann M. Patterson with whom he raised two daughters, Elizabeth Patterson-Strayer of Concord, North Carolina, and Patty Patterson Thompson of Alcolu; and
Whereas, he was also the proud grandfather of six grandchildren: Teddy Strayer, Christian Strayer, Russell Thompson, Alexandra Thompson, Hunter Thompson, and Callie Thompson; and
Whereas, Mr. Patterson was a native of Martinsburg, West Virginia, and graduated from Shepherd College in Shepherdstown, West Virginia, with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mathematics and Chemistry; and
Whereas, he enjoyed a diverse and varied career path serving in the United States Army as a veteran of the Korean War, Plant Manager for Holnam, Inc., and owner of Patterson's Orchards "Pick Your Own Peaches"; and
Whereas, Mr. Patterson worked to strengthen the surrounding community throughout his lifetime; and
Whereas, he was President of the Mining Association of South Carolina, President of the Tri-County Regional Chamber of Commerce, a member of the Lions Club of Holly Hill, treasurer of the Holly Hill Airport Commission, a member of the Orangeburg County Development Commission, and member of the Audubon Society; and
Whereas, he was a faithful member of the Hope Lutheran Church in Holly Hill; and
Whereas, Mr. Patterson was named Miner of the Year by the Mining Association of South Carolina in 1994 for his outstanding contributions to mining in South Carolina in fields such as reclamation, resource conservation, mining operations, public service, and community involvement; and
Whereas, Mr. Patterson is also survived by his sister, Anna Margaret Ritter of Boalsburg, Pennsylvania, and his beloved dog, "Buddy"; and
Whereas, Mr. William Alexander "Bill" Patterson, Jr., earned the respect and admiration of all who knew and loved him. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of William Alexander Patterson, Jr., President of the South Carolina Mining Association and extend their deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to his widow, Ann M. Patterson.
