A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND CONGRATULATE GARY BARNES, AN OUTSTANDING CITIZEN OF SOUTH CAROLINA, FOR HIS HARD WORK AND DEDICATION IN HIS LIFE, BOTH ON AND OFF THE FIELD OF SPORTS, AND UPON BEING INDUCTED INTO THE SOUTH CAROLINA ATHLETIC HALL OF FAME ON MAY 5, 2005.

Whereas, for his outstanding contributions as a player on numerous athletic teams, Gary Barnes was inducted into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame; and

Whereas, serving as a wide receiver while attending Clemson University, Gary Barnes scored the final points in the last Big Thursday Game; and

Whereas, Mr. Barnes also played in the Hula Bowl and the East-West Shrine Bowl in 1961; and

Whereas, his athletic career put him on the playing field with the Green Bay Packers of the National Football League and winning a Pre-Super Bowl National Championship; and

Whereas, Mr. Barnes was also a member of the Dallas Cowboys and the Chicago Bears, both NFL teams, and later was the first player to sign with the NFL expansion team, the Atlanta Falcons; and

Whereas, named an end on Clemson's One-Platoon Centennial Team, he was inducted into the Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame in 2002; and

Whereas, off the field, Mr. Barnes has spent the past nineteen years as a Municipal Court judge in Clemson; and

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are proud to recognize Gary Barnes as an outstanding athlete and role model for the citizens of the State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and congratulate Gary Barnes, an outstanding citizen of South Carolina, for his hard work and dedication in his life, both on and off the field of sports, and upon being inducted into the South Carolina Athletic Hall of Fame on May 5, 2005.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Gary Barnes.
