PROCLAIMING SEPTEMBER 17, 2005, AS "GEORGETOWN CITY DAY" IN COMMEMORATION OF THE BICENTENNIAL OF THE INCORPORATION OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN, EXPRESSING APPRECIATION TO THOSE ORGANIZING THE CELEBRATORY EVENTS SCHEDULED, AND CALLING UPON THE RESIDENTS OF THE CITY OF GEORGETOWN AND ALL INTERESTED SOUTH CAROLINIANS AND VISITORS TO TURN OUT AND PARTICIPATE IN THE BICENTENNIAL CELEBRATORY EVENTS OF THE DAY.
Whereas, Georgetown, South Carolina, officially became a town on December 19,1805, and was reincorporated as city in 1893; and
Whereas, on Saturday, September 17, 2005, the City of Georgetown will honor its 1805 incorporation as a town with a bicentennial celebration; and
Whereas, according to "A History of Georgetown County, South Carolina" by the late historian Dr. George Rogers, twenty years before the 1805 act that created the Town of Georgetown, the General Assembly allowed tax-paying residents of the unincorporated community to elect three commissioners each Easter who would be responsible for conducting business; and
Whereas, in 1787, the General Assembly provided for five commissioners and a clerk of town market to be elected on the first Monday in each April, and after Charleston was incorporated in 1783, a move got under way to incorporate Georgetown, with that effort being bearing fruit in 1805; and
Whereas, the 1805 Bicentennial Committee is working with city officials to replicate many of the events held one hundred years ago during the centennial celebration, while also making this celebration a reflection of 2005 and reflecting the growth and progress of the city in the last century; and
Whereas, Mayor Lynn Wood Wilson and Council Members Peggy Wayne, Brendon Barber, Clarence Smalls, Paige Sawyer, Jack Grimes, and Rudolph Bradley are committed to making this bicentennial celebration a great success; and
Whereas, in the spirit of their predecessors, who organized the 1905 centennial celebration, which ended with a fireworks display illuminating the invitation to "Come Again in 2005". Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, proclaim September 17, 2005, as "Georgetown City Day" in commemoration of the bicentennial of the incorporation of the City of Georgetown, express appreciation to those organizing the celebratory events scheduled, and call upon the residents of the City of Georgetown and all interested South Carolinians and visitors to turn out and participate in the bicentennial celebratory events of the day.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Honorable Lynn Wood Wilson, Mayor of the City of Georgetown.
