A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE THE ALL-GIRL "VEX CHALLENGE ROBOTEERS" OF CAROLINA HIGH SCHOOL AND ACADEMY IN GREENVILLE COUNTY FOR WINNING THE "AMAZE" AWARD IN THE "FOR INSPIRATION AND RECOGNITION OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY" CHAMPIONSHIP.

Whereas, teacher Ray Klimbal formed and mentored the all-girl "Vex Challenge Roboteers" with an eye toward increasing the number of women in engineering, an idea endorsed by Dr. Nahid Khazenie, a program manager at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration; and

Whereas, the five-girl, Carolina "Roboteers" competed against fifty-one teams from across America, Singapore, and Mexico for seven awards in the "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology" (FIRST) championship. They earned the "Amaze" award for transforming a sluggish robot overnight; and

Whereas, both NASA and the National Science Foundation support teams like the Roboteers and are among a growing number of groups that now have interventions or experiences designed to change girls' perceptions of science and math and get them excited about these fields; and

Whereas, the Carolina High School Roboteers had no experience in robotics before joining the team and competing in the FIRST championship. Their win paves the path for others girls to follow in math and science competitions. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives congratulate the "Vex Challenge Roboteers" of Carolina High School and Academy in Greenville County on winning the "Amaze" award at the "For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology" Championship.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Ray Klimbal.
