VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 59-63-525 SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT A STUDENT WHOSE PARENT OR GUARDIAN IS REQUIRED BY REGULATIONS TO LIVE ON A MILITARY BASE MAY CHOOSE WHICH SCHOOL THE STUDENT WILL ATTEND WITHIN THE COUNTY IN WHICH THE MILITARY BASE IS LOCATED, TO PROVIDE THAT THE PARENT OR GUARDIAN SHALL NOTIFY THE SCHOOL DISTRICT THAT THE STUDENT WILL ATTEND, AND TO PROVIDE THAT EACH SCHOOL DISTRICT SHALL PROVIDE TRANSPORTATION TO STUDENTS LIVING ON THE MILITARY BASE TO AND FROM THE SCHOOLS IN ITS DISTRICT.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
SECTION 1. Article 5, Chapter 63, Title 59 of the 1976 Code is amended by adding:
Section 59-63-525. Notwithstanding the designated school attendance zones, a student whose parent or guardian is required by regulations to live on a military base may choose which school the student will attend within the county in which the military base is located. The parent or guardian shall notify in writing the school district that the student will attend. Each school district in the county in which the military base is located shall provide transportation to students living on the military base to and from the schools in its district."
SECTION 2. This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
