A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR COACH HEYWARD BOUKNIGHT OF LEXINGTON COUNTY FOR OVER THIRTY YEARS OF COACHING AT BATESBURG-LEESVILLE HIGH SCHOOL AND TO COMMEMORATE HIM FOR ALL OF HIS MANY ACCOMPLISHMENTS THROUGHOUT HIS LEGENDARY CAREER.

Whereas, the coaching career of Heyward Bouknight has made him a legend in not only the Batesburg-Leesville community but in South Carolina high school sports history as well; and

Whereas, Coach Bouknight, a 1961 graduate of Batesburg-Leesville High School, was a player himself for the Panthers' football team headed by Coach Gus Allen; and

Whereas, Bouknight played a variety of positions for the team including halfback, defensive back, long snapper, kicker (kickoff duties) and even subbed as quarterback before an injury ended his playing career during his senior season; and

Whereas, after attending Spartanburg Junior College and then the University of South Carolina, Bouknight returned to Batesburg-Leesville in the fall of 1971 to serve as an assistant on Buddy Sharpe's staff while completing his student teaching; and

Whereas, in 1972, he took over the helm as the head coach for the "B" football team as well as head coach for the "B" team boys' and girls' basketball teams; and

Whereas, in 1973, Bouknight was promoted to head coach of Batesburg-Leesville Junior Varsity Football Team where he served through the 1982 season. He also was promoted to Junior Varsity girls' basketball coach in 1973 and served in that position for several years before taking over the head varsity girls' basketball position from 1978 to 1982; and

Whereas, in 1982, Coach Bouknight left Batesburg-Leesville to serve as athletic director and head varsity football coach for Saluda High School; and

Whereas, after a three year hiatus, he returned to Batesburg-Leesville in 1985 as the varsity offensive line coach for the Panthers under Head Coach Gary Smallen; and

Whereas, in 1989, Bouknight became the head coach for the Batesburg-Leesville Softball Team where he took the Panthers to their only state championship appearance after going 25-2 for the season and winning the Class AA Lower State Championship before losing to Crescent High School in the championship series; and

Whereas, one of the greatest personal accomplishments of Bouknight's coaching career was being selected as an assistant coach for the South All-Stars at the 1998 North/South All-Star Game. Bouknight was one of the first assistant coaches to be selected for this honor and served under Hartsville's own legendary coach, Lewis Lineberger; and

Whereas, the spring of 2006 will commence the final season and legendary coaching career of Heyward Bouknight as both the softball head coach and football offensive line coach. After thirty five years of coaching, Coach Bouknight will retire; and

Whereas, Coach Bouknight and his beautiful wife, Bobbie, have raised three wonderful children, Tripp, Mary Claire, and Rob. Tripp and his wife, Ashley, reside in Leesville, while Mary Claire and her husband, Brett Price, live in Batesburg; youngest son Rob is a senior at Limestone College in Gaffney. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and honor Coach Heyward Bouknight of Lexington County for over thirty years of coaching at Batesburg-Leesville High School and commemorate him for all of his many accomplishments throughout his legendary career.
