A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE MRS. HESTER BYRD OF LAURENS COUNTY AS SHE CELEBRATES HER ONE HUNDREDTH BIRTHDAY ON MARCH 28, 2006, AND TO WISH HER A MAGNIFICENT BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AS WELL AS MANY MORE YEARS OF HAPPINESS AND JOY.

Whereas, Mrs. Hester Byrd is the strong, witty family matriarch and mother of two wonderful daughters, the late Mrs. Ruby N. Perry, and the lovely and busy Mrs. Lillie "Toody" Thompson (late husband Jessie) of the home; grandmother of one bright gentleman, Assistant Principal of Laurens District High School Jeffery Scott Thompson (wife Tammy); and great grandmother of two handsome boys, Avery and Joshua Thompson of rural Laurens; and

Whereas, she is also the proud adopted parent of Mary Joe Walker (husband Lloyd), Angela Greer of Greenville, and Anthony Ramage (wife Debra) of Mississippi; and

Whereas, Mrs. Byrd loves young children and was known in her community as the Vine Street "village mom" who babysat four neighborhood children and helped make sure each of them grew up right and stayed out of trouble; and

Whereas, she is a very special aunt to a growing family that includes one hundred fourteen nieces and nephews from both the Smith and Byrd families; and

Whereas, Mrs. Byrd's faith and love for the Lord is undeniable as shown by her outstanding attendance at Springfield Missionary Baptist Church in Laurens where she is the oldest member and still attends on a regular basis; and

Whereas, she has a special passion for the work of the Usher Board, Missionary Society, and Hospitality Ministry; and

Whereas, Mrs. Byrd sprang into retirement after more than fifty years of service as the number one Domestic Engineer and Nanny for the late Dr. Lonnie Long and the vibrant Venice Long; and

Whereas, she is blessed with many talents. She has the reputation as being one of the best tailors in Laurens and holds the title of Oscar-Winning Stylist within her family; and

Whereas, Mrs. Byrd is also quite the baker in the kitchen. Her famous pies and cakes are culinary masterpieces that are still in high demand; and

Whereas, she currently enjoys her life gazing out at her pleasant view of Vine Street from her easy chair and loves to watch Judge Joe Brown and football on the television; and

Whereas, Mrs. Byrd loves to tell interesting and humorous stories about the past to amuse and enlighten all who care to listen while offering a living legacy of Black history facts and experiences; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives takes great pride in celebrating the birthday of a South Carolina centenarian queen who has taught so many the important life lessons she has experienced throughout her long existing tenure in this world and continues to remind everyone how special life can be. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate Mrs. Hester Byrd of Laurens County as she celebrates her one hundredth birthday on March 28, 2006, and wish her a magnificent birthday celebration as well as many more years of happiness and joy.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Byrd.
