A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND THE LITCHFIELD DANCE ARTS ACADEMY ON WINNING THE PRESTIGIOUS "OUTSTANDING SCHOOL" AWARD AT THE SEMI-FINALS FOR THE YOUTH AMERICA GRAND PRIX AND TO HONOR INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS WHO TOOK HOME TOP HONORS AT THE DANCE MASTERS OF AMERICA REGIONAL COMPETITION.

Whereas, it is appropriate for the South Carolina House of Representatives to honor the accomplishments of talented young South Carolinians and their dedicated teachers; and

Whereas, the Litchfield Dance Arts Academy (LDAA), home to the Litchfield Dance Company/Litchfield Ballet Foundation, is most deserving of this special recognition as it won the "Outstanding School" award at the Youth America Grand Prix regional semi-finals held recently in Greenville; and

Whereas, launched in the year 2000 by Larissa and Gennadi Saveliev, the Youth America Grand Prix was created to provide extraordinary educational and professional opportunities for young student dancers, acting as a stepping stone to a professional dance career; and

Whereas, director Ilka Doubek graciously thanked the supportive faculty and parents who have remained dedicated and loyal to LDAA's high standards and policies making this award a reality for the academy; and

Whereas, there were forty-five dance schools represented by approximately one hundred fifty contestants competing in three age divisions from nine to nineteen. These schools came from Texas, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Virginia, Washington D.C., New York, Georgia, Florida, North Carolina, and South Carolina; and

Whereas, the LDAA was only the second South Carolina school to win this award, the other school being the Governor's School in Greenville which hosts the competition; and

Whereas, Youth America Grand Prix holds semi-finals in Japan, Brazil, Mexico, and several cities in the United States, and it is the only student ballet competition in America which awards scholarships to leading dance schools in the world; and

Whereas, five members of the Litchfield Dance Company who are all from Pawleys Island won individual awards at the Youth America Grand Prix semi-finals in Greenville and Orlando: Gretchen McCutcheon, the ten-year-old daughter of Wendy and Gordon McCutcheon, was a classical ballet and contemporary qualifier in Orlando; Lida Fox, the eleven-year-old daughter of Tom Fox and Ilka Doubek, and Sarah Hepler, the twelve-year-old daughter of Steve and Chartee Hepler, were finalists in both cities for their contemporary solos and qualified for the NYC finals in the Pre Competitive age division; Katie Brackett, the twelve-year-old daughter of Dr. Craig and Amy Brackett, was a finalist in both cities for both her classical ballet and contemporary dance pieces in the Junior age division; and Carlie Mills, the thirteen-year-old daughter of David and Cheryl Mills, was a finalist in the classical category, won first place in the contemporary category and qualified for the NYC finals with her two ballet solos in Greenville; and

Whereas, at the Dance Masters of America Regional Competition, this talented group of dancers took home the following top honors: Carlie Mills won the title "Junior Miss Dance of SC"; Gretchen McCutcheon won the title "Petite Miss Dance of SC"; Lida Fox won the second place award in the Junior division; Sarah Hepler won the third place award in the Junior division; and Rachel Bailey, the seven-year-old daughter of Bruce and Betsy Bailey, won the second place award in the Petite division; and

Whereas, other finalists and contestants from the Litchfield Dance Company included Alexa Falvey, Sydney Wood, Cameron Reid, Holly Mettlen, and Kate Mueller in the Junior division and Kaitlin Sweeney, Lara Hoeweler, Shea Thomas, Alexandra Harrigan, and Dillon Moore in the Petite division; and

Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives pause to congratulate this talented group of dancers, instructors, and Litchfield Dance Arts Academy director Ilka Doubek on their professionalism and standard of excellence in dance unparalleled in the State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend the Litchfield Dance Arts Academy on winning the prestigious "Outstanding School" award at the semi-finals for the Youth America Grand Prix and honor individual members who took home top honors at the Dance Masters of America Regional Competition.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Ilka Doubek, director of Litchfield Dance Arts Academy.
