Whereas, Willie Salmond, affectionately known by his nieces and nephews as "Uncle Bill", by his cousins as "Bill", and by his close friends as "Billo", was born on May 19, 1928 to James and Dora James Salmond in Camden in Kershaw County; and

Whereas, remaining in Camden throughout his early years of education, he graduated from Jackson High School in 1947 and began his career there before departing for military duty as a United States Army draftee in the Korean War; and

Whereas, bravely fighting in honor of his country and in defense of the American way of life, he traveled to various combat zones, including below the 38th degree parallel in Korea, where he received two Silver Stars; and

Whereas, honorably discharged as a staff sergeant from the Army, he returned to the United States and set up his home in New York. There, he continued his education and began focusing on clothing design, and also worked in support services at the Brooklyn Law School and the Newburg, New York public school system; and

Whereas, Mr. Salmond greatly enjoyed his time as a road manager for his hometown friend and world-renowned popular singer, Brook Benton, with whom he had sung in a quartet during his early years in Camden; and

Whereas, returning to Camden in recent years, Mr. Salmond gives to his community by sharing his singing talent as a bass in local church choirs, and also serves countless senior citizens by providing transportation to medical facilities, doctors, churches, and shopping centers; and

Whereas, a noble and distinguished citizen and beloved patriarch, Mr. Salmond has made lasting contributions to his family, country, and community, and the House of Representatives joins his loving family in honoring him at the Briggs-Salmond Family Reunion on May 26-28, 2006 in Charleston, South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
