VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO HONOR ANGELA WALKER, MISS CHARLESTON, FOR HER FAMILIES HELPING FAMILIES INITIATIVE AND TO WISH HER LUCK AS SHE COMPETES AS ONE OF THE CONTESTANTS OF THE 2006 MISS SOUTH CAROLINA PAGEANT IN JULY OF 2006.
Whereas, the Miss South Carolina Pageant celebrates the rich history of providing personal and professional opportunities for the betterment of young women; and
Whereas, in July 2006, young women representing their counties and particular geographical areas all around the State will showcase their extraordinary talent, intelligence, and heart while competing for the coveted title of Miss South Carolina; and
Whereas, Angela Walker of Charleston is one of the Miss South Carolina contestants. She achieved the title of Miss Charleston and is the daughter of Jeffery Walker and Nanette Parrish. She graduated from Fort Dorchester High School in 2000 and from Charleston Southern University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Music with an emphasis in Vocal Performance and a minor in Religion; and
Whereas, the platform positions advocated by the contestants of the Miss South Carolina pageant and the many hours of service they will undertake in furtherance of these platforms will help countless numbers of South Carolinians in truly remarkable ways; and
Whereas, Miss Walker's chosen platform of Families Helping Families is certainly a noble one; and
Whereas, this lovely and talented young woman's platform focuses on the community's role in the prevention and eradication of child abuse. Together, churches, schools, communities, and corporations work to provide resources to parents including pre-parent education, parent support groups, reinforcement of positive parenting techniques, and encouragement of parents' involvement in the lives of their children; and
Whereas, according to Miss Walker, because ninety percent of child abuse happens in the home by a parent or another family member, it is vital that the community come together to coordinate the response to this preventable societal problem; and
Whereas, Miss Walker's platform should be applauded due to its focus on protecting the State's most precious resources, our children. Early and prolonged intervention can break the cycle of abuse and particularly have a significant impact on teen parents and single parents as well as two-parent families; and
Whereas, her dedication to this worthy cause is inspiring not just to other pageant contestants but to all South Carolinians as she serves as a role model for us all. Her efforts in preventing child abuse in the State have not gone unrecognized as she has worked in collaboration with Prevent Child Abuse South Carolina and was recently placed on the Board of Directors for this organization; and
Whereas, the House of Representatives takes great pride in recognizing Angela Walker, Miss Charleston, for her hard work in protecting the future well-being of the State's children. Her personal dedication and the time and effort she has put behind her chosen cause is worthy of notice by all South Carolinians. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honor Angela Walker, Miss Charleston, for her Families Helping Families initiative and wish her luck as she competes as one of the contestants of the 2006 Miss South Carolina pageant in July of 2006.
