VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR BISHOP PRESTON WARREN WILLIAMS ON HIS IMPRESSIVE INVESTITURE FOR A ONE-YEAR TERM AS PRESIDENT OF THE TWENTY-ONE MEMBER GLOBAL COUNCIL OF BISHOPS, AND TO WISH HIM ALL THE BEST UPON HIS APPOINTMENT.
Whereas, the one hundred and nineteenth Consecrated Bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Bishop Preston Warren Williams was appointed to the Seventh Episcopal District, representing South Carolina during the forty-seventh Session of the General Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church; and
Whereas, striving to achieve his goal of empowering the lives of the citizens of South Carolina, Bishop Williams has been instrumental in developing new initiatives to better the lives of his congregants; and
Whereas, insistent that the church reach its surrounding community, Bishop Williams forged a new partnership with the Department of Social Services to minister to the spiritual, intellectual, physical, emotional, and environmental needs of all people; and
Whereas, under his inspiring vision, members of the Annual Conference set out to directly influence their own communities in visiting correctional facilities, senior citizen service organizations, health care providers, schools, and other entities; and
Whereas, forging a relationship among elected officials and the African Methodist Episcopal Church, Bishop Williams has opened lines of communication between church and community leaders; and
Whereas, under Bishop Williams' tremendous leadership as Presiding Prelate of the 17th Episcopal District of Central Africa, membership grew one hundred and fifty percent, the district grew from seven annual conferences to sixteen, and from 152,000 to 225,894 members and 1,040 churches; and
Whereas, these significant increases in membership led to the establishment of the Twentieth Episcopal District of the African Methodist Episcopal Church during the Forty-Seventh Session, and many pastors and clergy were able to enroll and complete studies in classrooms throughout Central Africa and America; and
Whereas, more than 50,000 people have received Christ in Central Africa, guided by Bishop Williams' passion for his faith; and
Whereas, also possessing exceptional entrepreneurial skills, Bishop Williams has over forty years of business experience and was the owner of an insurance agency, which partnered with Allied Health Agencies to support the need of a community in which he lived; and
Whereas, a devoted family man, Bishop Williams shares a loving marriage with Wilma Delores Webb Williams and adores his four children; and
Whereas, Bishop Williams' outstanding gifts and work ethic made him a natural candidate to serve as the next president of the global Council of Bishops, a position he will assume officially on June 26, 2006; and
Whereas, as council president, Bishop Williams will be instrumental in the administration of policy for the denomination; and
Whereas, the House of Representatives commends Bishop Williams for the immeasurable contributions he has made all over the world on behalf of his faith and its followers, and wishes him all the best upon his appointment as council president. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor Bishop Preston Warren Williams on his impressive investiture for a one-year term as President of the twenty-one member global Council of Bishops, and wish him the best upon his appointment.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Bishop Preston Warren Williams.
