VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR MICHAEL A. BUTLER, ASSISTANT CHIEF OF POLICE OF THE GREENWOOD POLICE DEPARTMENT, FOR HIS OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO SOUTH CAROLINA LAW ENFORCEMENT, AND TO WISH HIM ALL THE BEST UPON HIS RETIREMENT.
Whereas, it is with great pride that the House of Representatives honors those individuals who put themselves in the literal line of fire in order to protect our neighbors, families, and friends; and
Whereas, born in Greenwood, South Carolina, Michael A. Butler is the son of Horace E. and Inez Morgan Butler; and
Whereas, a devoted husband and father, Officer Butler shares a loving marriage with the former Lynda Belcher and adores his three children and six grandchildren; and
Whereas, Officer Butler began his career in law enforcement in 1973, when he volunteered to join a pilot program of the Greenwood Police Department as a "cadet officer"; and
Whereas, he became a school crossing guard in 1974, and by 1975 he achieved his dream and was hired as a full-time police officer with the Greenwood Police Department; and
Whereas, graduating from the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy in 1976, Officer Butler was transferred to the Detective Division in 1977 and rose through the ranks until he was promoted to Detective Sergeant in 1980; and
Whereas, excelling in every project he was assigned, he was quickly promoted again to the rank of Lieutenant in 1984 and became the Uniform Division Captain of "Echo" Shift in 1990. After being transferred back to the Detective Division in 1992, he was promoted to Major in 1992 and subsequently became the Assistant Chief of Police in 1993; and
Whereas, as Assistant Chief of Police, Officer Butler has supervised the department's Internal Affairs Division since its inception; and
Whereas, Officer Butler graduated from Penn State University's Police Officer Executive Management program in 1993 and graduated from the prestigious FBI National Academy in 1996; and
Whereas, a faithful member of Mars Hill Baptist Church, Officer Butler has served as Sunday School Superintendent and as a member of the Senior Choir and Male Chorus; and
Whereas, holding an Associate Degree in Theology from Calvary Bible Institute, he was licensed to preach by Mars Hill Baptist Church in 2001 and was ordained by the Little River Missionary Baptist Association in 2003. He currently serves as pastor of the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church; and
Whereas, the Greenwood community and South Carolina as a whole are fortunate to have Officer Michael Butler assuring that citizens are safe and that justice comes to bear upon criminal suspects. The contributions he made to the Greenwood Police Department will not soon be forgotten. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor Michael A. Butler, Assistant Chief of Police of the Greenwood Police Department, for his outstanding contributions to South Carolina law enforcement, and to wish him all the best upon his retirement.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Officer Michael A. Butler.
