TO RECOGNIZE MARINE CORPS LEAGUE COMMANDANT ED HAMMONS FOR HIS HONORABLE AND OUTSTANDING CAREER IN THE UNITED STATES MARINE CORPS AND THE MARINE CORPS LEAGUE, COMMEND HIM FOR THE MANY DECORATIONS HE HAS EARNED OVER THE PAST FORTY-TWO YEARS, THANK HIM FOR HIS LOYAL AND DEDICATED SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY, AND EXTEND BEST WISHES FOR A LONG AND FULFILLING RETIREMENT.
Whereas, with mixed emotions, the members of the Senate have learned that Marine Corps League Commandant Ed Hammons is retiring from the Marine Corps League on April 2, 2005; and
Whereas, our country has been blessed over the years with brave, able, and talented members joining the armed services, and Commandant Ed Hammons is clearly one of the most dedicated individuals who has served; and
Whereas, Commandant Ed Hammons joined the Marine Corps in September 1963 and was assigned to Camp Pendleton, California as a machine gunner; and
Whereas, in March 1965 he was deployed to Vietnam. He was attached to the 3rd Marine Division and was wounded in action in April 1966. Shortly thereafter, he was reassigned to duty in the United States; and
Whereas, heroically, he again volunteered for Vietnam in September 1966. Commandant Hammons was wounded two additional times in Vietnam before receiving a medical discharge in 1970; and
Whereas, in April 1996 Commandant Hammons founded Marine Corps League Detachment #939. The detachment is named after his brother, James L. Hammons, who was killed in action while serving in Vietnam with the 3rd Marines Division in 1968; and
Whereas, he went on to charter many successful Marine Corps League detachments, including eight in a one-year time span; and
Whereas, Commandant Hammons' distinguished decorations include the Bronze Star with Combat "V", three Purple Hearts, a combat promotion to Sergeant E-5, a Combat Ribbon, two Presidential Unit Citations, and a Good Conduct Medal; and
Whereas, he also has collected many honors through service with the Marine Corps League including: the 2003 William "Bill" Carter Award; Distinguished Citizen Gold, the highest national honor; four Distinguished Citizens Silver Awards, the highest state honor; five Distinguished Citizen Bronze Awards; 2003 Department Marine of the Year; 1996, 2002, and 2003 Detachment Marine of the Year; and, most notably, National Marine of the Year in 2003; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are proud to publicly recognize and honor Commandant Ed Hammons for his extraordinary heroism in defense of our country and continued support and service through the Marine Corps League. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate:
That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, hereby recognize Marine Corps League Commandant Ed Hammons for his honorable and outstanding career in the United States Marine Corps and the Marine Corps League, commend him for the many decorations he has earned over the past forty-two years, thank him for his loyal and dedicated service to our country, and extend best wishes for a long and fulfilling retirement.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Commandant Ed Hammons.
