A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE UPON THE DEATH OF MR. WILLIE LEE TYLER OF AIKEN FOLLOWING THE TRAGIC TRAIN DERAILMENT IN GRANITEVILLE ON JANUARY 6, 2005, AND TO EXTEND THE DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO THEIR FAMILIES AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the Senate were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Mr. Willie Lee Tyler of Aiken following the catastrophic Graniteville train derailment and chemical leak on January 6, 2005; and

Whereas, this loss is felt deeply in the community and in the Woodhead plant where Mr. Tyler worked as a dedicated and experienced Chemical Controller; and

Whereas, he began his career at Avondale in 1968 in the Maintenance Department. He worked his way through the company, and in 2000, Mr. Tyler was Avondale Mills' nominee for the South Carolina Manufacturing Alliance's "Manufacturing Citizen of the Year"; and

Whereas, Mr. Tyler was known throughout the plant and the community as a positive, friendly person who always had a smile on his face; and

Whereas, Mr. Tyler was a faithful member of Sardis Baptist Church in Salley where he served as a deacon, and he was also an accomplished gospel singer, often featured on the local Sunday morning television show, Parade of Quartets; and

Whereas, a devoted husband to his wife Henrietta, Mr. Tyler was a loving father to his two daughters, Vickie Tyler and Coretta Bonyers. Mr. Tyler is also survived by four sisters, two brothers, and five grandchildren; and

Whereas, Mr. Willie Lee Tyler earned the respect and admiration of all who knew and loved him and the South Carolina Senate is proud to honor him and acknowledge this great loss to the community and State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of Mr. Willie Lee Tyler of Aiken following the tragic train derailment in Graniteville on January 6, 2005, and extend the deepest sympathy to their families and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mrs. Henrietta Tyler of Aiken.
