VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
COMMENDING DR. JOHN L. CARSON FOR HIS EXEMPLARY SERVICE AS PRESIDENT OF ERSKINE COLLEGE AND SEMINARY DURING THE PAST SEVEN YEARS, AND WISHING HIM AND HIS FAMILY WELL AS HE LEAVES ERSKINE CONTINUING TO FOLLOW GOD'S CALLING.
Whereas, with mixed emotions, the members of the Senate have learned that Dr. John L. Carson is resigning from his position as President of Erskine College and Seminary on June 3, 2005; and
Whereas, Dr. Carson is married to the former Sarah Ellen Patrick, a fellow E.B. Kennedy Scholar and 1967 Erskine College graduate. They are the loving parents to four Erskine College graduates, and have three wonderful grandchildren; and
Whereas, in 1973 Dr. Carson received a Master of Divinity degree from the Reformed Theological Seminary in Jackson, Mississippi, and in 1988 received a Doctoral Degree from Aberdeen University in Scotland; and
Whereas, a former member of the Erskine Seminary faculty, Dr. Carson was also an Associate Reformed Presbyterian pastor before becoming president of Erskine in 1998. He was serving as pastor of the First ARP Church in Gastonia, North Carolina, when he received the call to Erskine; and
Whereas, he has served on many boards and committees of the ARP Church and was chairman of the North American Presbyterian and Reformed Council in 1991. He is a member of the Evangelical Theological Society and co-editor of "To Glorify and Enjoy God," published in 1994; and
Whereas, under Dr. Carson's leadership, Erskine has enjoyed record enrollment increases in both the college and seminary; has completed major campus improvements, including the renovation of all residence halls; and has launched the largest capital campaign in its history; and
Whereas, Erskine's Gold Campaign is the biggest fund-raising venture of Dr. Carson's presidency, and with two years remaining, the campaign goal is two-thirds complete, with over $25.2 million raised toward a goal of $36.8 million. In furtherance of Erskine's commitment to excellence in learning, Dr. Carson vows to continue work on the campaign until its completion; and
Whereas, Dr. Carson's vision and accomplishments will continue to pay dividends for the Erskine College and Seminary well into the future and the members of the Senate would like to publicly thank Dr. Carson for his exemplary service as President. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, commend Dr. John L. Carson for his exemplary service as President of Erskine College and Seminary during the past seven years, and wish him and his family well as he leaves Erskine while continuing to follow God's calling.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. John L. Carson.
