A SENATE RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING THE HUNTER-KINARD-TYLER "LADY TROJANS" BASKETBALL TEAM ON WINNING THE 2005 CLASS A STATE CHAMPIONSHIP, THE FIRST IN SCHOOL HISTORY, AND HONORING THE PLAYERS, COACH TONIA YOUNG, AND ASSISTANT COACH ELLA JONES ON THEIR IMPRESSIVE UNDEFEATED 25-0 SEASON.

Whereas, on Saturday, March 5, 2005, the "Lady Trojans" captured their first ever State Championship by defeating defending champion C. E. Murray High School by a score of 68 to 52 in the Class A State Championship. The win capped a remarkable undefeated 25-0 season; and

Whereas, the Lady Trojans' incredible season also included capturing the Region 4-Class A Championship and the Upper State Championship; and

Whereas, in the state championship game, both teams began evenly with C. E. Murray up by five points nearing the end of the first quarter. Lady Trojan Shalika Smalls then threw up a forty-foot shot which sailed through the net closing the gap to two points ending out the quarter; and

Whereas, that shot appeared to swing the momentum in favor of the Lady Trojans, who went on to post a double-digit lead in each subsequent quarter on their way to a sixteen point victory; and

Whereas, the Lady Trojans basketball team was ably trained and led by Coach Tonia Young and Assistant Coach Ella Jones who instilled a strong work ethic and sense of team pride in the girls which directly led to the championship season; and

Whereas, the Hunter-Kinard-Tyler 2005 Lady Trojans championship basketball team is comprised of: Ashley Patterson, Shamanita Patterson, Courtney Milhouse, Santana Clemons, Natalie Vaughn, Shalika Smalls, Shanta O'Neal, Crystal Robinson, Shadonis Stephens, Marla Ryans, and Kienda Stroman; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are proud to recognize the spirit and accomplishments of the Hunter-Kinard-Tyler Lady Trojans basketball team and take this opportunity to congratulate and commend them for their championship performance. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate the Hunter-Kinard-Tyler "Lady Trojans" basketball team on winning the 2005 Class A State Championship, the first in school history, and honor the players, Coach Tonia Young, and Assistant Coach Ella Jones on their impressive undefeated 25-0 season.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Coach Tonia Young on behalf of the winning championship team.
