WELCOMING MR. TOM JOYNER AND THE TOM JOYNER MORNING SHOW "SKY SHOW" TO THE CITY OF GREENVILLE, SOUTH CAROLINA ON FEBRUARY 3, 2006, AND THANKING HIM AND THE TOM JOYNER FOUNDATION FOR HIGHLIGHTING THE ACHIEVEMENTS OF AND PROVIDING FINANCIAL SUPPORT TO SOUTH CAROLINA'S HISTORICALLY BLACK COLLEGES AND UNIVERSITIES.
Whereas, Mr. Tom Joyner was born in Tuskegee, Alabama in 1949 and received a bachelor's degree in sociology from Tuskegee Institute; and
Whereas, after graduating from Tuskegee Institute, he joined WRMA in Montgomery, Alabama as a radio news announcer. He was subsequently employed at a number of radio stations which included WLOK in Memphis, Tennessee, KWK in St. Louis, Missouri, and KKDA in Dallas, Texas; and
Whereas, Tom Joyner's success led him to the City of Chicago, Illinois where he worked at radio stations WJPC, WVON, and WBMX before achieving immeasurable success at WGCI; and
Whereas, he made headlines in 1985 as "The Hardest Working Man in Radio" when he hosted a morning radio show at KKDA in Dallas while simultaneously hosting an afternoon radio show at WGCI in Chicago. His daily commute between the two cities led to high ratings in both cities while earning him the nickname "The Fly Jock"; and
Whereas, since 1994 the Tom Joyner Morning Show has aired as an immensely popular syndicated radio show nationwide which offers a mix of music, comedy, and guests who have included Stevie Wonder and President Bill Clinton; and
Whereas, in 1998, Mr. Joyner created the Tom Joyner Foundation with the sole mission of encouraging students to attend the nation's Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Since its inception, the foundation has raised more than thirty million dollars to help thousands of students fulfill their dream of obtaining a college education; and
Whereas, the Tom Joyner Foundation has been instrumental in recognizing and providing financial support to several of South Carolina's Historically Black Colleges and Universities which include Benedict College, South Carolina State University, Voorhees College, Allen University, and Morris College; and
Whereas, it has come to the attention of the members of the General Assembly that Mr. Tom Joyner and the Tom Joyner Morning Show "Sky Show" will be broadcasting live from the City of Greenville, South Carolina on February 3, 2006; and
Whereas, it is fitting and proper for the members of the General Assembly to pause in their deliberations to welcome Mr. Joyner to the Great State of South Carolina and to thank him and the Tom Joyner Foundation for highlighting the achievements of and providing financial support to the State's Historically Black Colleges and Universities. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, welcome Mr. Tom Joyner and the Tom Joyner Morning Show "Sky Show" to the City of Greenville, South Carolina on February 3, 2006, and thank him and the Tom Joyner Foundation for highlighting the achievements of and providing financial support to South Carolina's Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mr. Tom Joyner.
