A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES ON THE DEATH OF HOYT E. KIRVEN, JR. OF SUMMERTON AND TO EXTEND THEIR DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the House of Representatives are deeply saddened to learn of the death of Hoyt Eric Kirven, Jr. of Summerton at the age of eighty on Tuesday, September 21, 2004; and

Whereas, Hoyt Eric Kirven, Jr. was the beloved husband of Margaret Foxworth Kirven and was the son of Hoyt E. Kirven, Sr. and Arvilla Hall Kirven; and

Whereas, together with his wife, he raised two daughters: A. Ann Kirven of Summerton and Mary-Jane Olivia Martin of Venice, Florida; and

Whereas, he was also a proud grandfather to two grandsons: Joseph Hubert Wood III and Chadwick Kirven Wood and was happy to boast five great-grandchildren; and

Whereas, Mr. Kirven attended the University of South Carolina and retired from his life's work at the H. E. Kirven Lumber Company in Pinewood; and

Whereas, he served his country bravely in World War II as a member of the 272nd Field Artillery Unit, was a member and past commander of Pinewood American Legion Post 117, and continued to meet with his fellow servicemen at reunions every year; and

Whereas, Mr. Kirven was not just a patriot but also a much admired member of the community who worked to strengthen his local region through his extensive civic contributions; and

Whereas, he was a member and past president of the Pinewood Lion's Club, a member and past district governor of the Pinewood Puritan Club, an avid member of the Sumter County Gamecock Club; was selected as Clarendon County Fan of the Year in 2002; was a lifetime member of the Sumter Elk's Club BPOE885, a lifetime member of VFW Post 6444, a member of the Moose Club in Kingstree, a Boy Scout leader in Pinewood, and a member of the Bethea Home of Darlington Board of Trustees, served as treasurer of the Sumter Development Board, served on the Sumter County Board of Commissioners, was a board member emeritus at Bank of America, and was a member of the Summit Club; and

Whereas, he was a faithful member and past deacon of Pinewood Baptist Church; and

Whereas, Mr. Kirven is also survived by a sister, Martha Ann Kolb of Sumter, and a brother, Robert F. Kirven of Pinewood; and

Whereas, Mr. Hoyt. E. Kirven, Jr. earned the respect and admiration of all who knew and loved him, and the South Carolina House of Representatives is proud to honor the many contributions that he made to his community, state, and nation. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives express their profound sorrow on the death of Hoyt E. Kirven, Jr. of Summerton and extend their deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Margaret Foxworth Kirven of Summerton.
