A BILL

TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 2-20-80, SO AS TO PROHIBIT A NONJUDICIAL CANDIDATE OR A PERSON HOLDING AN OFFICE ELECTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY FROM ATTEMPTING TO INFLUENCE THE OUTCOME OF AN ELECTION OF ANOTHER CANDIDATE FOR OFFICE ELECTED BY THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY, EXCEPT HIS OWN ELECTION, AND TO PROVIDE A PENALTY.

Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:

SECTION    1.    Chapter 20, Title 2 of the 1976 Code is amended by adding:

"Section 2-20-80.    (A)    A candidate or a person offering for or holding a nonjudicial office elected by the General Assembly may not attempt to influence the election of another candidate for office elected by the General Assembly, except his own election.

(B)    A person violating the provisions of this section is guilty of a misdemeanor and, upon conviction, must be fined not more than one thousand dollars or imprisoned not more than ninety days."

SECTION    2.    This act takes effect upon approval by the Governor.
