TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND THE REFOUNDING OF THE HISTORIC COLLEGE OF ARTS AND SCIENCES AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH CAROLINA AND ITS REDEDICATION TO THE MISSION OF BEING A FAITHFUL INDEX TO THE AMBITIONS AND FORTUNES OF THE STATE.
Whereas, the University of South Carolina was founded in 1801 in order to provide the finest liberal arts and professional education for the citizens of South Carolina; and
Whereas, since its first students arrived in 1805, the University has seen its duty to instruct its citizens in languages, human culture, the arts, mathematics, and the social, natural, and physical sciences; and
Whereas, the State faces a new century with unique and difficult challenges to its institutions and its citizens; and
Whereas, the University in the twenty-first century has committed itself to interdisciplinary research and teaching that integrates the arts, humanities, and sciences in order to prepare institutions and citizens for a complex and rapidly changing future. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, recognize and commend the refounding of the historic College of Arts and Sciences at the University of South Carolina and its rededication to the mission of being a faithful index to the ambitions and fortunes of the State.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Andrew A. Sorensen, the President, University of South Carolina and to Dr. Mary Ann Fitzpatrick, Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, University of South Carolina.
