A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND COMMEND MAJOR GENERAL JOHN SOUTHY GRINALDS, USMC (RETIRED), FOR HIS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AS PRESIDENT OF THE CITADEL AS HE RETIRES FROM THIS POSITION, AND TO WISH HIM GREAT SUCCESS IN ALL HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, born in Baltimore, Maryland on January 5, 1938, Major General John Southy Grinalds spent most of his childhood as a Southern boy in Macon, Georgia; and

Whereas, General Grinalds' academic career is laden with leadership and scholarship as a class officer, an all-state football player, an honor student, a colonel of the Junior ROTC unit, and a Rhodes Scholar and through graduation with honors from Harvard Business School where he earned his Masters in Business Administration; and

Whereas, Major General John Southy Grinalds began his much respected tenure as the eighteenth President of The Citadel in 1997, and after eight years of service he has decided to retire from this position; and

Whereas, President Grinalds has helped the college maintain its top rankings in US News & World Report annual rankings, and The Citadel has been rated the number two public college in its category in the South for the past three years; and

Whereas, The Citadel also has maintained the highest four-year graduation rate of any public college in South Carolina and in the country among colleges that draw students from the same peer group; and

Whereas, during his term as President, General Grinalds has ushered The Citadel to a higher level and had seen the college grow to full-capacity enrollment and has aided in the assimilation of women into the Corps of Cadets; and

Whereas, admissions records have set all-time records for three consecutive years and the qualifications of entering freshmen have risen steadily; and

Whereas, General Grinalds' tenure as President not only has been marked with significant milestones in admissions, coeducation, and rankings, but also with strides in fundraising, media relations, and his support for integrating leadership and ethics into all aspects of campus life; and

Whereas, it is with great admiration for his esteemed presidency, that the members of the General Assembly bid farewell to Major General John S. Grinalds as the eighteenth president of The Citadel. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and commend Major General John Southy Grinalds, USMC (Retired), for his distinguished service as President of The Citadel as he retires from this position and wish him great success in all his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Major General John Southy Grinalds, USMC (Retired).
