A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO HONOR AND RECOGNIZE THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF COMMANDER PERRY LEE McCOY OF KERSHAW COUNTY UPON HIS RETIREMENT FROM HIS POSITION AS COMMANDER OF AMERICAN LEGION POST 17 AND TO EXTEND BEST WISHES TO HIM IN HIS FUTURE ENDEAVORS.

Whereas, Perry Lee McCoy was born in 1927, one of three sons of James B. and Eva Perry McCoy who served their country in the Armed Forces during the Second World War; and

Whereas, Perry McCoy enlisted in the United States Army in 1946, and was assigned to the 11th Airborne in Occupied Japan where he served valiantly; and

Whereas, Mr. McCoy is married to the former Betty Shaylor and has two children, a son Terry, born in 1956, and a daughter Karen, born in 1959; and

Whereas, Perry McCoy began his tenure as Commander of American Legion Post 17 in 2001, and has been involved in numerous activities benefiting the Kershaw County community and the State, including changing the name of King Haigler Ball Field to American Legion Field, recognizing all living Prisoners of War from Kershaw County, honoring all Korean War Veterans, and beginning a partnership with Birchwood High School Junior ROTC at the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice; and

Whereas, among other things Commander McCoy was instrumental in the sponsoring of a trip for World War II Post 17 members to go to Washington, D.C. for the Dedication of the World War II Memorial Monument; and

Whereas, while Perry McCoy was Commander in 2003, Post 17 received an amazing seven State Legion Awards, and he recently presided over an exciting eighty-fifth anniversary celebration at the post; and

Whereas, throughout his stint, Commander McCoy has hosted fundraisers, provided scholarships for children to attend Junior ROTC Camp, and begun programs to deliver food to families when a member dies and to shut-ins at Christmas; and

Whereas, Mr. Perry McCoy distinguished himself through selfless leadership as the Commander of American Legion Post 17, and has preformed exemplary public service to his community and State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honor and recognize the accomplishments of Commander Perry Lee McCoy of Kershaw County upon his retirement from his position as Commander of American Legion Post 17 and extend best wishes in his future endeavors.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Commander Perry Lee McCoy.
