A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO HONOR MR. JOE M. PERKINS OF GREENVILLE COUNTY FOR AN OUTSTANDING CAREER OF EDUCATING, MENTORING AND COACHING THE YOUTH OF GREENVILLE AND GREENWOOD COUNTIES AND TO CELEBRATE THE DEDICATION OF THE JOE M. PERKINS ATHLETIC STADIUM AT SOUTHSIDE HIGH SCHOOL.

Whereas, after having graduated from Benedict College and Atlanta University, Mr. Joe M. Perkins began his career as a mathematics teacher and assistant football coach under Head Coach Luther Bradley at Brewer High School in Greenwood, South Carolina, where he worked from 1957 to 1967; and

Whereas, after ten years at Brewer High School, Coach Perkins returned to his alma mater to become the head football coach at Sterling High School in Greenville, South Carolina, where he also continued to teach mathematics; and

Whereas, upon arriving at Sterling High School, Coach Perkins' hometown put a lot of pressure on him with big expectations, which he exceeded immediately by returning the football program to the winning ways Sterling was so accustomed to in the past years; and

Whereas, during his short tenure at Sterling from 1967 to 1970, Coach Perkins was responsible for sending eleven young men to colleges and universities through football scholarships; and

Whereas, he spent the final twenty-two years of his teaching career at Southside High School from 1970 to 1992, where he continued his positive approach to academic and athletic excellence; and

Whereas, while at Southside, he served as head football coach from 1973 to 1984, and remained a teacher in the classroom until 1992. Coach Perkins also expanded his coaching duties in 1985 to include girls' basketball and track, with both programs being highly successful under his whistle; and

Whereas, after thirty-five years of dedication and commitment to serving high school students inside the classroom and on the playing field, Coach Joe Perkins never used a "sick" day; and

Whereas, to honor him for all the sacrifices and contributions he has made for high school academics and athletics, Southside High School has dedicated its football stadium in his name, the Joe M. Perkins Athletic Stadium; and

Whereas, it is fitting and proper for the members of the General Assembly to pause in their deliberations to recognize the many accomplishments of this great son of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, honor Mr. Joe M. Perkins of Greenville County for an outstanding career of educating, mentoring and coaching the youth of Greenville and Greenwood Counties and celebrate the dedication of the Joe M. Perkins Athletic Stadium at Southside High School.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. Joe M. Perkins.
