A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND MRS. LUCILLE GILLIARD OF CHARLESTON COUNTY FOR HER MANY CONTRIBUTIONS TO HER FAMILY AND COMMUNITY, AND TO WISH HER EVERY HAPPINESS UPON HER NINETY-SECOND BIRTHDAY.

Whereas, Mrs. Lucille Virginia Samuels Gilliard was born on May 12, 1914, in Bonneau, South Carolina, to her proud parents, Isaac and Cecily Owens Samuels; and

Whereas, Mrs. Gilliard was reared by her caring grandmother, the late Ms. Betsy Samuels, and attended Berkeley County public schools; and

Whereas, as a young woman, she worked as a domestic worker and lived in Charleston with her aunt; and

Whereas, during that time she began her romance with her loving husband, the late Mr. Isaac Gilliard. Their courtship led to a loving, fruitful marriage blessed by four children, nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild; and

Whereas, the family settled in the Rosemont community and has been a permanent fixture there for almost fifty-seven years; and

Whereas, active in her church community, Mrs. Gilliard has been a member of Union Missionary Baptist Church for the past sixty-seven years, where she served as a member of the Missionary Board and the Women's Auxiliary until her retirement; and

Whereas, Mrs. Gilliard exemplifies a true missionary spirit and constantly gives of herself in helping others as she lives her life based on her personal motto, "May the work I've done speak for me"; and

Whereas, constantly considering others' needs before her own, she often visits the sick and shut-in, serving as a faithful friend and neighbor to all; and

Whereas, while not in church or helping those who need her, Mrs. Gilliard enjoys spending time in her garden and working in her yard; and

Whereas, the Rosemont community and all who are fortunate enough to know Mrs. Gilliard are enriched because of her kind, gentle nature and come together to celebrate her extraordinary ninety-second birthday. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives, by this resolution, commend Mrs. Lucille Gilliard of Charleston County for her many contributions to her family and community, and wish her every happiness upon her ninety-second birthday.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Lucille Gilliard.
