TO CONGRATULATE AND HONOR JOSEPHINE CASTLE OF YORK COUNTY FOR BEING THE FIRST AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMAN ELECTED TO YORK CITY COUNCIL AND TO OFFER HER THE GREATEST SUPPORT AS SHE BEGINS HER DUTIES TO REPRESENT THE PEOPLE OF DISTRICT 3 AND IMPROVE THE LIFE FOR ALL IN YORK.
Whereas, it was a long time coming but, for the first time since York's 1841 incorporation, voters have elected an African American woman to serve on York City Council; and
Whereas, Josephine Castle will make history when she joins York City Council this July, showing continued steps for progress for the city; and
Whereas, Castle is a lifelong resident of York who drives a bus for the York School District and lives in a humble home in the Valley, a low income neighborhood near Galilean Road; and
Whereas, she is an ordinary, hard-working, yet passionate woman who wears jeans and t-shirts, is not afraid of getting her hands dirty, and is an ideal fit for representing her district; and
Whereas, Castle has a beautiful vision for the future of her community, with her top priority being to clean up the slums, eliminate drug dealings and use of firearms, and get people off the streets and into stable jobs; and
Whereas, her goal and dream to make District 3 a better and safer place to live is, indeed, possible with the cooperation from the entire council and community; and
Whereas, her future plans also include seeking federal, state, and county assistance for upgrading water and sewer lines on the streets of District 3; and
Whereas, there is no denying that Castle has the heart and desire, in addition to the right qualities and common sense, to see her community gets the help it needs; and
Whereas, she is looking forward to being a vigorous advocate for her district and the city as a whole and making a difference in the lives of its people. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:
That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate and honor Josephine Castle of York County for being the first African American woman elected to York City Council and offer her the greatest support as she begins her duties to represent the people of District 3 and improve the quality of life for all in York.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Josephine Castle.
