A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

SHARING THE EXCITEMENT OF THE RESIDENTS OF ALLENDALE COUNTY ON THE OCCASION OF THE DEDICATION OF THE RESTORED AND REOPENED ALLENDALE COUNTY COURTHOUSE AT THE COURTHOUSE DEDICATION CEREMONY AND HOMECOMING ON MARCH 19, 2005.

Whereas, over six years ago, the original Allendale County Courthouse was burned down due to arson, and plans began immediately for the building of the present structure while maintaining the historical integrity of the landmark building; and

Whereas, the first Allendale County Courthouse was built in 1922, only three years after the fledgling county was created from pieces of Barnwell and Hampton Counties. It was built by architect G. Lloyd Preacher, who went on to notoriety with many projects in Atlanta, including the Atlanta City Hall; and

Whereas, the original blueprints for the Allendale County Courthouse were located and preserved, and copies will hang in the current facility, along with other historical items; and

Whereas, the original exterior courthouse walls were saved, and the interior up-fitted with modern technology, including computers, high-speed Internet, and a network; and

Whereas, County Administrator Art Williams noted: "County Council put in a lot of effort trying to make sure the courthouse was done in a quality fashion. They wanted to ensure that the citizens of Allendale County got a courthouse that they would be proud of for many years to come. I think we have done that." Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly share in the excitement of the residents of Allendale County on the occasion of the dedication of the restored and reopened Allendale County Courthouse at the courthouse dedication ceremony and homecoming on March 19, 2005.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to County Administrator Art Williams on behalf of Allendale County.
