TO CONGRATULATE AND COMMEND COLUMBIA COLLEGE ON 150 YEARS OF PROVIDING EXCEPTIONAL EDUCATIONAL AND LEADERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES FOR WOMEN AND TO WISH THE COLLEGE MUCH SUCCESS AS IT CONTINUES TO PROVIDE A QUALITY EDUCATION FOR MANY GENERATIONS TO COME.
Whereas, Columbia College was founded on February 8, 1854 by representatives of the South Carolina Methodist Conference, who voted to establish Columbia Female College in order to "educate young women for fruitful service to church, state and nation"; and
Whereas, the General Assembly of South Carolina granted a charter for Columbia Female College on December 21, 1854 and the College opened its doors in October of 1859 with an enrollment of 121 students; and
Whereas, Columbia College is the eleventh oldest women's college in the United States and boasts an enrollment of 1500 students from twenty-three states and twenty countries; and
Whereas, today Columbia College is a private, liberal arts, women's college with a coeducational Evening College and Graduate School, offering forty undergraduate majors and a premedical program, as well as two graduate programs; and
Whereas, over 150 years, more than 16,000 women have become alumnae of the College, including the only woman from South Carolina to be elected to the United States Congress, the first woman appointed to the United States Fourth Circuit of Appeals, and the founder of the South Carolina Wil Lou Gray Opportunity School; and
Whereas, we are proud to recognize this exceptional college and the outstanding alumnae who are family members and legislative staff members, and also the many thousands of teachers, homemakers, professionals, and business leaders who have contributed greatly to providing a better quality of life for our state, nation, and world for the past 150 years. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate and commend Columbia College on 150 years of providing exceptional educational and leadership opportunities for women and wish the College much success as it continues to provide a quality education for many generations to come.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Caroline Whitson, President of Columbia College.
