To whom was referred a Bill (S. 994) to amend the Code of Laws of South Carolina, 1976, by adding Section 40-80-25 so as to provide that after June 30, 2006, a person, etc., respectfully

TO AMEND THE CODE OF LAWS OF SOUTH CAROLINA, 1976, BY ADDING SECTION 40-80-25 SO AS TO PROVIDE THAT AFTER JUNE 30, 2006, A PERSON WHO HAS BEEN CONVICTED OF ARSON MUST NOT PERFORM FIREFIGHTING DUTIES IN THIS STATE UNLESS THE PERSON IS EMPLOYED AS OF JUNE 30, 2006, AS A FIREFIGHTER IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE LAW IN EFFECT AT THAT TIME AND TO FURTHER PROVIDE THAT IF THE PERSON LEAVES THIS PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT, THE PROHIBITION APPLIES.
Be it enacted by the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina:
SECTION 1. Chapter 80, Title 40 of the 1976 Code is amended by adding:
"Section 40-80-25. Notwithstanding Section 40-80-20, after June 30, 2006, a person must not perform firefighting duties in this State if the person has been convicted of or pled guilty or nolo contendere at any time in any jurisdiction to arson or any other offense provided for in Article 3, Chapter 11, Title 16, unless as of June 30, 2006, that person is employed as a firefighter in accordance with Section 40-80-20. However, if a person employed as a firefighter as of June 30, 2006, leaves that place of employment, the provisions of this section apply."
SECTION 2. This act takes effect July 1, 2006.
