TO RECOGNIZE AND WELCOME CONGRESSMAN JOHN R. LEWIS OF GEORGIA ON THE OCCASION OF HIS ADDRESS TO THE PHI BETA SIGMA AFRICAN-AMERICAN MALE IMAGE AWARDS.

Whereas, the Honorable John R. Lewis graciously will honor the African-American Male Image Awards ceremony by serving as its keynote speaker on February 9, 2008, at the Brookland Baptist Church Banquet and Conference Center in West Columbia; and

Whereas, born on February 21, 1940, outside of Troy, Alabama, a young John Lewis became inspired to champion civil justice by the year-long Montgomery Bus Boycott that began in 1955 following Rosa Parks' dignified refusal to bow to the City of Montgomery, Alabama's policy of racial segregation on its public transit system; and

Whereas, John Lewis continued his drive for civil rights as a student at Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee, where he organized sit-in demonstrations at segregated lunch counters in Nashville and endured physical violence by participating in Freedom Rides to protest segregation on interstate bus systems in the South; and

Whereas, in 1977 President James E. Carter, Jr., appointed Lewis to direct the volunteers of ACTION, a federal volunteer agency. Lewis began his career as an elected official when he was elected in 1981 to the Atlanta City Council, later winning election as a Democrat to the One Hundredth Congress in 1986 as a member of Georgia's Fifth Congressional District, which he has since represented with distinction; and
