A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO CELEBRATE THE WONDERFUL OCCASION OF THE ONE HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY OF THE TOWN OF ELGIN AND TO CONGRATULATE AND COMMEND MAYOR PETE JAMES AND THE CITIZENS OF ELGIN FOR A CENTURY OF SHOWCASING BOTH THE CHARMING BEAUTY AND PRUDENT PROGRESS OF THIS SOUTH CAROLINA JEWEL.

Whereas, the town of Elgin, nestled in rural Kershaw County, quietly boasts enchanting vistas of South Carolina's waterways and wildflowers; and

Whereas, a cotton-producing area originally known as Blaney when founded in 1908, Elgin flourished as a railroad town that exported its fine quality cotton; and

Whereas, in 1962, the renowned Elgin Watch Company moved its headquarters to town, and the citizens showed their enthusiasm for the newcomers by renaming their town in honor of the prestigious company; and

Whereas, the watch company moved five years later, but the town has since become home for numerous other industries through the years, including B.F. Goodrich; and

Whereas, the recent installation of sewer lines in Elgin and the advent of the town's first large chain grocery in 2005 are the first indication of the changes poised to occur soon in Elgin: the construction of a new town complex slated to begin in 2008, including a new town hall and fire and police stations; and

Whereas, as part of a beautification program for the centennial celebration, a mural commemorating Elgin's history will be painted on the town's oldest building; and

Whereas, on January 26, 2008, the town of Elgin plans a celebration to rehearse a century of community life and to anticipate a bright future enhanced by the rich heritage of the past. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, celebrate the wonderful occasion of the one hundredth anniversary of the town of Elgin and congratulate and commend Mayor Pete James and the citizens of Elgin for a century of showcasing both the charming beauty and prudent progress of this South Carolina jewel.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Mayor Pete James.
