A SENATE RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING AND HONORING LIEUTENANT COLONEL OLIVER L. NORTH (RET.) FOR APPEARING AT THE USC-AIKEN ETHERREDGE CENTER ON MARCH 12, 2008, FOR WHICH THE PROCEEDS WILL BENEFIT OUTSTANDING JUNIOR ROTC STUDENTS IN AIKEN COUNTY THROUGH THE MARINE CORPORAL MATTHEW VINCENT DILLON SCHOLARSHIP FUND.

Whereas, Lieutenant Colonel Oliver L. North (Ret.) was born in San Antonio, Texas, graduated from the United States Naval Academy, Annapolis, Maryland in 1968, and served twenty-two years as a United States Marine; and

Whereas, Lt. Col. North is a combat decorated Marine who has received The Silver Star, The Bronze Star for Valor, and two Purple Hearts; and

Whereas, assigned to the National Security Council Staff in the Reagan administration, Lt. Col. North was the United States government's Counter-Terrorism Coordinator from 1983-1986, and was involved in planning the rescue of medical students on the Island of Grenada and the daring capture of the hijackers of the cruise ship Achille Lauro. After assisting in the planning of the United States raid on Mohammar Quadaffi's terrorist bases in Libya in response to terrorists attacks on United States servicemen in Germany, Lt. Col. North was targeted for assassination by the infamous terrorist leader Abu Nidal; and

Whereas, Lt. Col. North has spent months embedded with the United States forces in Iraq and Afghanistan; and

Whereas, Lt. Col. North is the founder of Freedom Alliance, a foundation that provides scholarships for the sons and daughters of service members killed in action; and

Whereas, Lt. Col. North is the founder of a small business, an inventor, and holder of three United States patents, is a NRA Life member, a syndicated columnist, and the host of "War Stories" on the FOX News Channel; and

Whereas, Lt. Col. North is a New York Times best-selling author of ten books, with his most recent novel, The Assassins, released in paperback in October 2006; and

Whereas, Lt. Col. North claims his greatest accomplishment is being the husband of one, the father of four, and the grandfather of eight. Now, therefore,

Be it Resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, do hereby congratulate and honor Lieutenant Colonel Oliver L. North for appearing at the USC-Aiken Etherredge Center on March 12, 2008, for which the proceeds will benefit outstanding Junior ROTC students in Aiken County through the Marine Corporal Matthew Vincent Dillon Scholarship Fund.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Lieutenant Colonel Oliver L. North.
