A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE WILLIAM JAMES "JAY" PRICE, OF RICHLAND COUNTY, UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS BEING NAMED SOUTH CAROLINA SPEECH AND HEARING ASSOCIATION AMBASSADOR FOR 2008.

Whereas, at the recent South Carolina Speech and Hearing Association's fiftieth-anniversary celebration, held at the Charleston Convention Center on February 21 and 22, 2008, William James "Jay" Price was named South Carolina Speech and Hearing Association Ambassador for 2008; and

Whereas, during the association's celebratory luncheon and gala, six-year-old Jay and his parents, Scott and Robin Price, accepted the award before a packed house of speech and hearing professionals; and

Whereas, Dr. Cheryl Rogers, director of the Auditory Verbal Therapy Program at the University of South Carolina Speech and Hearing Research Center, proudly introduced Jay and his family and told Jay's story of being born with hearing deficiencies, trying hearing aids and finding little to no benefit as his hearing declined, and ultimately gaining his hearing through a cochlear implant. Much hard work on Jay's part, as well that of his therapists, teachers, audiologists, and family, resulted in his mainstreaming into Forest Lake Elementary School's kindergarten program in the fall of 2007; and

Whereas, also thanks to all this hard work and team effort, Jay's language, cognitive skills, auditory development, and speech production are on target for his age, as are his interests, which include music, artwork, and baseball; and

Whereas, Jay's case also showcases the three keys of successful speech and hearing therapy: early identification; a family-centered approach to therapy; and appropriate team intervention by family, schoolteachers, audiologists, speech pathologists, and administrators; and

Whereas, the General Assembly takes great pleasure in applauding Jay on reaching his current educational milestone and in congratulating this fine young man on being named South Carolina Speech and Hearing Association Ambassador for 2008, and the members join with Jay's many friends in wishing him the blessing of God upon all his future endeavors. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, congratulate William James "Jay" Price, of Richland County, upon the occasion of his being named South Carolina Speech and Hearing Association Ambassador for 2008.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Jay Price.
