A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR OSCAR L. KEMP FOR HIS SERVICE IN THE MIDLAND VALLEY AREA, OF AIKEN COUNTY, AND TO CONGRATULATE HIM FOR BEING NAMED MIDLAND VALLEY AREA CHAMBER OF COMMERCE CITIZEN OF THE YEAR.

Whereas, the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina are pleased to learn that the Midland Valley Area Chamber of Commerce has selected Oscar L. Kemp as Citizen of the Year for outstanding service to his community; and

Whereas, a native of the Valley area in Aiken County, Oscar Kemp was educated in Clearwater public elementary schools and graduated from the Haines Institute, which is now Lucy C. Laney High School in Augusta, Georgia; and

Whereas, he earned a bachelor's degree in science from Benedict College and a master's degree in education from South Carolina State College, and he took further studies in Madison, Wisconsin, and Atlanta, Georgia; and

Whereas, after teaching in several schools in Aiken County, he began coordinating adult education for twenty-seven years at Langley Bath Clearwater High School, which later became Midland Valley High School when it merged with Clearwater; and

Whereas, in recognition of his impact on the field of education and on his community, he was named Teacher of the Year at Midland Valley High School in 1990; and

Whereas, a member of Old Storm Branch Baptist Church, he is the past chairman of the Board of Deacons and serves as a member of the Brotherhood Ministry, an advisor to the Storm Keepers, a member of the board for the church's Child Development Center, and Sunday school superintendent while teaching Sunday school and Bible studies; and

Whereas, although retired from thirty-eight years of service in Aiken County schools, he has continued to serve his community as a commissioner on the Valley Public Service Authority, co-chairperson of the Midland Valley Area Chamber of Commerce, the past president of the Midland Valley Lions Club, and a local and statewide leader of the Masons and the Shriners; and

Whereas, he and his beloved wife Rubena Stoney Kemp have a fine daughter, Catrina Kemp Jackson, and they have four adoring grandchildren, Storme, Dejon and twins Jaslyn and Jalin; and

Whereas, the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina are grateful for the many years of service that Oscar Kemp has given to support education in the great State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and honor Oscar L. Kemp for his service in the Midland Valley Area, of Aiken County, and congratulate him for being named Midland Valley Area Chamber of Commerce Citizen of the Year.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be presented to Oscar L. Kemp.
