A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

CONGRATULATING PALMETTO HEALTH BAPTIST EASLEY ON THE CELEBRATION OF THEIR FIFTIETH ANNIVERSARY AND THANKING THEM FOR PROVIDING QUALITY AND COMPASSIONATE CARE, COMFORT, AND DIGNITY TO GENERATIONS OF PICKENS COUNTY FAMILIES.

Whereas, in 1947, Dr. W. M. Whitesides and Mr. Johnny Roper had a vision to build a hospital for the citizens in the Easley community; and

Whereas, Mr. Whitesides and Mr. Roper shared this vision with members of the Easley Rotary Club, meeting on the front porch of the Pecan Terrace Hotel. Mr. Ellison McKissick, Sr., Mrs. Gertrude Hagood Matthews, Mr. Julian Wyatt, Mr. R. C. McCall, and Mr. Roper all believed in the importance of this project and each contributed a substantial donation; and

Whereas, local resident Sarah Hamilton Meece donated the land for the hospital, and construction on Easley General Hospital began in 1951. Once available funds were exhausted in 1953, the South Carolina Baptist Convention agreed to complete the project and equip the facility. On June 29, 1958, Easley Baptist Hospital was dedicated and began serving patients two days later; and

Whereas, over the years Easley Baptist Hospital has grown in size responding to the public's increased demands for the latest technologies and services. A modern emergency room was made possible by a generous gift from Mr. Ellison McKissick, Jr., and the support of the citizens of the community. In 1992, the hospital opened a state-of-the-art Birthing Center, offering a personal approach to maternity and postpartum care. In 1996, the Baptist Medical Center opened a new thirteen-bed Transitional Care Unit, which provides patients with short-term, subacute rehabilitative care. In more recent years, renovations to the Outpatient Surgery Wing, Critical Care Unit, MRI Unit, and Cardiac Rehabilitation have demonstrated the commitment to provide patients with the finest care; and

Whereas, in 1998, Baptist Healthcare System signed a formal alliance with Richland Memorial Hospital, creating the largest integrated healthcare system in South Carolina, Palmetto Health. Palmetto Health Baptist Easley is excited to be an integral part of this alliance, which will strengthen and improve the hospital and the ability to provide quality care in the future; and

Whereas, Palmetto Health Baptist Easley is now a leading community hospital located in the beautiful upstate of South Carolina; and

Whereas, as part of this community for fifty years, Palmetto Health Baptist Easley has provided compassionate care to multiple generations of Pickens County families. Making a difference in peoples' lives is part of its rich heritage, and its commitment to community health and wellness guides the hospital's services; and

Whereas, Palmetto Health Baptist Easley has set a priority of changing the way healthcare is delivered to the community and its goal has been to involve physicians, employees, and leaders to serve together to help create a new culture that unites everyone within the organization, providing the highest quality of care, comfort, and dignity; and; and

Whereas, the hospital's areas of excellence include surgery, obstetrics, orthopedics, emergency medicine, imaging, and diagnostics. In addition, a strong primary care physician network affiliated with the hospital in strategically located offices meets the needs of the community; and

Whereas, Palmetto Health Baptist Easley is one of four hospitals in America to receive the prestigious Premier Orthopedic Award for Hip and Knee Replacement in 2006; and

Whereas, Palmetto Health Baptist Easley is the only hospital in the country to receive the acclaimed national healthcare service consulting firm The Studer Group's "Fire Starter" award twice. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly congratulate Palmetto Health Baptist Easley on the celebration of their fiftieth anniversary and thank them for providing quality and compassionate care, comfort, and dignity to generations of Pickens County families.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Palmetto Health Baptist Easley.
