A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, UPON THE OCCASION OF ITS FORTIETH ANNIVERSARY, AND TO COMMEND CITY MANAGER JOHN SMITHSON AND THE CITY COUNCIL FOR FORTY YEARS OF PROSPERITY.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate are pleased to learn that North Myrtle Beach, a true South Carolina treasure, will celebrate its fortieth anniversary; and

Whereas, the home of the state dance, the Shag, the City of North Myrtle Beach is located amid vistas of endless skies along a nine-mile stretch of the Atlantic Ocean's coastline dotted with peaceful marshes and sea oats that sway on gentle sand dunes; and

Whereas, North Myrtle Beach was formed when four small beach towns, Cherry Grove, Ocean Drive, Crescent Beach, and Windy Hill Beach, voted in a referendum to consolidate into one community; and

Whereas, the charter to recognize the incorporation of North Myrtle Beach was issued by the State on May 7, 1968, and the newly incorporated town elected its first mayor, R. L. Edge, the father of the Honorable Tracy Edge; and

Whereas, with an annual population of fifteen thousand today and over three hundred fifty city employees, North Myrtle Beach hosts millions of visitors every year who enjoy the wide beaches, warm weather, and family atmosphere that strengthen the tourism industry in the State; and

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate congratulate the City of North Myrtle Beach, a jewel of South Carolina, for forty years of growth and prosperity. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, congratulate North Myrtle Beach, upon the occasion of its fortieth anniversary, and commend City Manager John Smithson and the City Council for forty years of prosperity.
