A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO HONOR AND RECOGNIZE EDWARD RAYMOND MOORE, SR., OF RICHLAND COUNTY, UPON THE OCCASION OF HIS NINETY-SECOND BIRTHDAY, AND TO WISH HIM MANY MORE YEARS OF CONTINUED HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina are pleased to learn that Edward Raymond Moore, Sr., a loyal son of South Carolina, will celebrate the milestone of ninety-two years on May 25, 2008; and

Whereas, born in 1916 in Hendersonville, South Carolina, the third of five sons to Lottie Speights Moore and George Edward Haskell Moore, his mother moved the family from the large plantation to Walterboro shortly after his father's death; and

Whereas, after he completed Walterboro High School excelling in athletics, he attended Clemson University to study architecture, where he played football on the freshmen squad before transferring to Auburn University in Alabama; and

Whereas, on February 7, 1942, he married his beloved wife, the late Mattie Daisy Burnette, and they raised four fine children, Edward Raymond Moore, Jr., Thomas George Moore, Elise Moore Edson, and Deborah Moore Ervin, who blessed them with fourteen adoring grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren; and

Whereas, before World War II, Raymond Moore trained at Fort Knox under General George Patton and then served with distinction during the war as a radio officer with the 20th Army Air Corps, 313th Bombardment Wing, on Tinian Island in the South Pacific. He was the officer on duty who first received the coded radio message from the Enola Gay that the atomic bomb had been dropped on Hiroshima, Japan; and

Whereas, after the war he returned to his small family in Walterboro and commuted to Aiken daily to work as an electrician at the Dupont nuclear plant at the Savannah River site before he moved his growing family to Aiken in 1953; and

Whereas, when he became a Christian in the 1960's, he wanted to show his gratitude, so he retired early and purchased the option for property in Rosman, North Carolina, in order to build a Christian camp for youth. In 1968, he sold his option to Bob Jones University and built all the camp's structures at The Wilds, including two homes, a lodge, a dining hall, and twelve cabins, all of which are still used today; and

Whereas, in 1969, Raymond Moore moved his family to Charleston County and became the electrical contractor for the veterans' hospital that was built at the former Charleston Naval Base and retired again in the 1980's, when he and his wife cultivated acres of beautiful day lilies at their home on John's Island. After her death in 2001, he moved to Blythewood to live with his oldest son; and

Whereas, the members of the General Assembly congratulate Edward Raymond Moore, Sr., upon reaching the benchmark of ninety-two years, and express their gratitude for his faithful service to this State and to our nation. Now, therefore,
