A SENATE RESOLUTION

IN MEMORY OF HELEN ANTOINETTE KNOX BUTTS UPON HER DEATH AT THE AGE OF ONE HUNDRED, AND IN RECOGNITION OF HER BEING THE OLDEST RESIDENT OF THE VILLAGE OF NEWRY.

Whereas, Helen Antoinette Knox Butts was born in the High Falls Community in Oconee County on July 12, 1907, as the eldest child of the late James Franklin and Lou Ada Grogran Knox; and

Whereas, she was a descendant of a rich heritage, including John Nean Craig, a Revolutionary War soldier and his wife, Catherine Wilson Craig, who lived in the Old Pickens District of SC and who are listed in the Founding Families of the State of South Carolina, an organization that recognizes ancestors who were in South Carolina on or before May 23, 1788 when South Carolina was granted statehood. Additionally, her grandfather, Arthur Knox served in Company E, First South Carolina Rifles in the War Between the States; and

Whereas, Helen Butts was married to the late Stephen William Butts, and from this union were four daughters, Mary Lou, Bonnie Jean, Linda Ann, and Martha Dianne; and

Whereas, she attended Keowee High School, where she excelled in academics and athletics, winning a gold medal for her oratorical skills in a declamation contest, and was an outstanding member of her high school basketball team; and

Whereas, Mrs. Butts was a longtime member of Lydia Baptist Church where she served in many capacities. She and her husband were members of the Order of the Eastern Star, Courtenay Chapter #184, and jointly served as Worthy Matron and Worthy Patron of the Courtenay Chapter; and

Whereas, she was a lifelong, avid reader, knowledgeable in many topics, and her keen intellectual skills brought great admiration from those who knew her; and

Whereas, she was a woman with a deep and abiding reverence for her God, an unquestionable character, a great respect for all persons, and had a devotion beyond reproach to her husband and family whom she loved with unselfishness and willing sacrifice. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize Helen Antoinette Knox Butts for a life well-lived and upon her death at one hundred years of age as the oldest resident of the Village of Newry.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the family of Helen Antoinette Knox Butts.
