A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

URGING THE SOUTH CAROLINA CONGRESSIONAL DELEGATIONS, AND THE UNITED STATES SOCIAL SECURITY ADMINISTRATION TO IMMEDIATELY PROVIDE A FULL-TIME, SUITABLY EQUIPPED AND STAFFED SOCIAL SECURITY OFFICE IN CHEROKEE COUNTY FOR THE WELFARE AND BENEFIT OF ITS CITIZENS.

Whereas, for many years a Social Security office has been staffed at an office located in Gaffney, South Carolina; and

Whereas, most times the office was only open part-time with little or no public announcements of its opening dates and times; and

Whereas, most recently, the office was only open for one-half day, or four hours, and then only once per month; and

Whereas, this was a satellite office of the Spartanburg, South Carolina Office of Social Security. The Gaffney satellite was located in an undesirable space at a Cherokee County nursing home facility, Peachtree Centre; and

Whereas, officials at the Spartanburg Social Security office have given Cherokee County notice that, effective January 2007, Social Security will no longer be visiting Gaffney at the Peachtree Centre. If the citizens of Cherokee County have Social Security business, it can now only be conducted by using either a toll free telephone number, a Social Security website, or visiting the Spartanburg office; and

Whereas, the citizens of Cherokee County, with a population of more than 53,000 people, deserve a full-time, staffed and adequately equipped Social Security office. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate, the House of Representatives concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly, by this resolution, implore the South Carolina Congressional Delegations, and the United States Social Security Administration to immediately, as is practical, provide a full-time, suitably equipped and staffed Social Security office located in Cherokee County for the welfare of its citizens.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the Cherokee County Legislative Delegation, the South Carolina Congressional Delegations, and the United States Social Security Administration.
