A SENATE RESOLUTION

TO EXPRESS THE PROFOUND SORROW OF THE MEMBERS OF THE SOUTH CAROLINA SENATE UPON THE DEATH OF MARINE CORPORAL MATT DILLON, OF AIKEN COUNTY, WHO DIED WHILE SERVING HIS COUNTRY IN IRAQ, AND TO CONVEY DEEPEST SYMPATHY TO HIS FAMILY AND MANY FRIENDS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina Senate were deeply saddened to learn of the death of Marine Corporal Matt Dillon on December 11, 2006, in Al Anbar Province, Iraq; and

Whereas, dedicated to serving his country and devoted to securing freedom and democracy for the Iraqi people, Corporal Dillon was a smart and disciplined soldier who volunteered for tough jobs and was on track for promotion despite his youth; and

Whereas, Dillon surrendered his life during his second tour of Iraq, having completed an earlier tour ending in 2004 and having been wounded in action and awarded the Purple Heart medal from that first tour; and

Whereas, Corporal Dillon, the son of Neal and Lucy Dillon, was a graduate of Wardlaw Academy and came from a proud family tradition of military service, his father having served in Vietnam, one brother having served in the Marines, and another brother presently serving as a lieutenant colonel in the Army; and

Whereas, a loving son and brother, Dillon, a true patriot and a man of strong Christian faith, leaves behind a legacy of unparalleled honor and integrity and is remembered for his genuine selflessness and abiding commitment to all endeavors he undertook; and

Whereas, he will be sorely missed but will forever stand as an example of a fine South Carolina soldier who gave his life that others might live to enjoy the freedom we so often take for granted. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the Senate:

That the members of the Senate of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, express their profound sorrow upon the death of Marine Corporal Matt Dillon, of Aiken County, who died while serving his country in Iraq, and convey deepest sympathy to his family and many friends.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Neal and Lucy Dillon.
