A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION

TO COMMEND THE TALENTED ARTISANS OF EDGEFIELD POTTERY FOR THEIR OUTSTANDING WORK IN BRINGING EXCEPTIONAL POTTERY PIECES TO THE CITIZENS OF SOUTH CAROLINA.

Whereas, two hundred years ago in the Old Edgefield District of South Carolina there began a pottery-making tradition based on Chinese technology, using traditional English methods to make diverse types of pottery; and

Whereas, this tradition swept the nation and became known as the beginning of the alkaline-glazed pottery tradition; and

Whereas, today, the Nineteenth Century alkaline-glazed pottery tradition has been recognized internationally as a cherished art form, with contributions made to it from all components of this specialized artistic community; and

Whereas, the Edgefield Pottery legacy has brought great distinction to the State of South Carolina; and

Whereas, pieces of Edgefield Pottery grace the homes of countless South Carolinians, and each carries with it a special story; and

Whereas, it is with great pride that the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina pause to honor those involved with the crafting of Edgefield Pottery, for bringing such a rich, beautiful history to our State. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:

That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, commend the talented artisans of Edgefield Pottery for their outstanding work in bringing exceptional pottery pieces to the citizens of South Carolina.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to the members of the Edgefield County Council.
