A HOUSE RESOLUTION

TO CONGRATULATE MRS. CLARA FOWLER KNIGHTON, OF GREENVILLE COUNTY, ON THE OCCASION OF HER NINETIETH BIRTHDAY, AND TO WISH HER A JOYOUS BIRTHDAY CELEBRATION AND MANY MORE YEARS OF HEALTH AND HAPPINESS.

Whereas, the members of the South Carolina House of Representatives are delighted to learn that Mrs. Clara Fowler Knighton will celebrate her ninetieth birthday on April 18, 2007; and

Whereas, Clara Fowler Knighton, ninth child of Will and Florence Fowler, was born on April 18, 1917, not long after the dawn of the twentieth century, and as that century and the beginnings of the twenty-first century have brought incredible changes and developments to this nation, Mrs. Knighton has been there to witness nearly all of them; and

Whereas, having lived in Simpsonville nearly all her life, Mrs. Knighton and her three sisters and five brothers were brought up on a seventy-eight-acre farm, the family raising its own food and running a cotton gin and lumber mill on the property; and

Whereas, in a simple life filled with chores, yet also with hours of fun, music was a big part of the family's life. Four of young Clara's siblings formed the Fowler Quartet, which sang for church and community events, and the family moved to Asheville, North Carolina, for one year to allow the quartet to study music, this year being the only period of time Mrs. Knighton lived away from Simpsonville; and

Whereas, in 1939, upon her marriage to Paul Knighton, she moved a half mile from her family home on Burdette Road to the Knighton farm on East Georgia Road, and she has spent the past sixty-eight years of her life there; and

Whereas, Mrs. Knighton worked fourteen years at Stone Manufacturing Company until the birth of her daughter, Mary, in 1953, at which time she became a full-time homemaker for eighteen years. She then returned to work for seven years at Union Carbide Electronics; and

Whereas, after joining Simpsonville Methodist Church in 1965, Clara Knighton sang in the choir for many years and served in various positions in the church, including twelve years as church treasurer, and she continues to serve regularly as a collection counter today. She routinely enjoys activities at her church, as well as those of the Simpsonville Senior Activity Center; and

Whereas, Mrs. Knighton and her older brother Bill, ninety-two, are the remaining members of her immediate family; and

Whereas, the House of Representatives is proud to honor this truly special lady at the celebration of her ninetieth birthday and joins with her family and friends in congratulating her on reaching this extraordinary milestone. Now, therefore,

Be it resolved by the House of Representatives:

That the members of the House of Representatives of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, congratulate Mrs. Clara Fowler Knighton, of Greenville County, on the occasion of her ninetieth birthday, and wish her a joyous birthday celebration and many more years of health and happiness.

Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mrs. Clara Fowler Knighton.
