VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO HONOR MR. WILLIAM B. "BILL" DUKES, OF LEXINGTON COUNTY, FOR HIS NUMEROUS AND INVALUABLE CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE STATE OF SOUTH CAROLINA AND TO COMMEND HIM FOR HIS LIFELONG COMMITMENT TO HIS FAMILY, CHURCH, AND COMMUNITY.
Whereas, William B. "Bill" Dukes was born and raised in Columbia, South Carolina, where he attended Dreher High School, and in 1964, graduated from the University of South Carolina School of Business with a Bachelor of Science degree; and
Whereas, after graduating from the University of South Carolina, Mr. Dukes courageously and admirably served four years in the United States Air Force, where he was promoted to captain in 1968 and received the Air Force Commendation Medal; and
Whereas, Bill has built a remarkable career as a restaurateur having served as Senior Vice President of Steak and Ale Restaurants and co-founding Longhorn Steakhouses in North and South Carolina. He is also founder of the Blue Marlin Seafood Restaurants in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia, as well as, Willy's Grill located in The Vista in Columbia; and
Whereas, Mr. Dukes has benevolently served his community throughout his professional career, having been an avid supporter of the South Carolina Junior Golf Foundation for many years, graciously hosting the annual Celebration of Golf reception during Golf Week in South Carolina; and
Whereas, Bill has also been an active supporter of the University of South Carolina, having served as a past member of the USC Educational Foundation and Executive Committee, as well as, a past member of the Alumni Council. He is a lifetime member of the Alumni Association and the Gamecock Club, and he also currently serves on the USC Executive Board for the Bicentennial Campaign; and
Whereas, Mr. Dukes has demonstrated his dynamic leadership skills in professional and community organizations by previously serving as chairman of the Regional Convention Center and Arena Study Committees and currently serving as chairman of the Regional Convention Center Commission; and
Whereas, he has also served on the board of directors for the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce, and currently serves on the Newberry College Board of Trustees, the Richland-Lexington Airport District Commission, and the State Museum Foundation; and
Whereas, Mr. Dukes has been appointed as a member of the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources Marine Advisory Committee; and
Whereas, Bill is firmly committed to his family as he and his wife, JoAnne, have raised two wonderful sons, Ryan and Matthew; and
Whereas, Mr. Dukes and his family are devout Christians and members of Mountain Horeb Lutheran Church in Chapin where they go to worship and serve the Lord; and
Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly would like to show their gratitude to Mr. Dukes by recognizing the many contributions he has made to the State of South Carolina. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this resolution, honor Mr. William B. "Bill" Dukes of Lexington County for his numerous and invaluable contributions to the State of South Carolina and to commend him for his lifelong commitment to his family, church, and community.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Mr. William B. "Bill" Dukes.
