VERSIONS OF THIS BILL
TO HONOR DR. BLAIR A. RUDES FOR HIS DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AS A MEMBER OF THE FIRST STATE RECOGNITION COMMITTEE AND THE INVALUABLE EXPERTISE HE PROVIDED TO THE SOUTH CAROLINA COMMISSION FOR MINORITY AFFAIRS AS IT SOUGHT TO OFFICIALLY RECOGNIZE THE ANCESTORS OF THE NATIVE AMERICAN PEOPLE OF THIS STATE.
Whereas, it is appropriate to recognize those persons who selflessly give of their time, talents, and energy for the benefit of their fellow man and their State as a whole, and Dr. Blair A. Rudes is certainly one such person deserving of this special recognition; and
Whereas, Dr. Rudes served the State most notably as a member of the first State Recognition Committee formed in 2004; and
Whereas, the members of the 115th General Assembly and Governor Mark Sanford approved regulations setting forth the process for the ancestors of the indigenous people of this State to be officially recognized by the State; and
Whereas, this historic legislation created the State Recognition Committee to review all applications for State recognition and make recommendations to the Board of the South Carolina Commission for Minority Affairs; and
Whereas, Dr. Rudes, along with the other members of this important committee, dedicated countless hours without compensation to the review of volumes of historical documents and records before making their recommendations; and
Whereas, these documents and records provided invaluable evidence of the presence, movement, and historical contributions of Native Americans in South Carolina and brought attention to the suffering of the ancestors in the lands to which their descendants now maintain a powerful spiritual connection as evidenced by their customs and legends; and
Whereas, Dr. Rudes served with great distinction on the State Recognition Committee from its inception in 2004 to 2006, and as a member of the committee, he contributed greatly to the public acknowledgment of the resilience of the Indian people who have endeavored against many obstacles to preserve their unique cultural identity and history for future generations; and
Whereas, it is with great pleasure that the members of the South Carolina General Assembly pause to appreciate the many and varied contributions of Dr. Blair A. Rudes, himself of Native American ancestry of the Western Abenaki (Wabanaki) community at Odanak, Quebec, and to thank him for the dedication of his professional career to the preservation of native languages and for his meritorious service on the State Recognition Committee. Now, therefore,
Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate concurring:
That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, by this resolution, honor Dr. Blair A. Rudes for his distinguished service as a member of the first State Recognition Committee and acknowledge the invaluable expertise he provided to the South Carolina Commission for Minority Affairs as it sought to officially recognize the ancestors of the Native American people of this State.
Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to Dr. Blair A. Rudes.
